kailash mansarovar tour

The Kailash Mansarovar Tour via Simikot Hilsa is a special high altitude journey that connects Nepal, the remote Humla region, the Tibet border, Lake Mansarovar, and Mount Kailash in one carefully planned route.

This package is designed for travellers who want a different way to reach the Kailash region instead of following the regular overland route through Kyirong.

mount kailash

The journey uses domestic flights, helicopter support, border travel, Tibetan plateau driving, and the famous Kailash Kora, making it one of the most unique Kailash tour options from Nepal.

This is not only a trekking package and it is not only a religious tour.

kailash mansarovar kora

It is better understood as a spiritual adventure and high altitude travel experience for the travellers.

The route includes city comfort in Kathmandu, the lowland plains of Nepalgunj and the remote mountain airstrip of Simikot.

lake mansarovar

Morever, the tour also covers the the helicopter route to Hilsa, the border crossing into Tibet, the dry landscapes around Purang or Taklakot, the peaceful shore of Lake Mansarovar, and the powerful mountain setting of Mount Kailash.

The main trekking part comes during the Kailash Kora, where you walk from Yamadwar to Dirapuk, cross Dolma La Pass, continue to Zuthulphuk, and complete the circuit before returning.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

The journey begins in Kathmandu at 1,350 metres. This first part of the trip is important for arrival, preparation, briefing, document checking, and final packing.

Since the route crosses into Tibet, travel documents and permits need to be handled carefully.

Travellers should not treat Kailash travel like a last minute trek. China visa requirements, Tibet Travel Permit, Nepal restricted area permits for the Simikot Hilsa route, border rules, health condition, and flight operation all need proper coordination before the journey begins.

After Kathmandu, the route moves west to Nepalgunj, a warm lowland city near the Indian border. This section creates a complete contrast with the mountain journey that follows.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Simikot Hilsa

From Nepalgunj, you fly to Simikot, the district headquarters of Humla and one of the most remote gateways to the Tibet border.

Simikot sits high above the Humla Karnali valley and gives the first real feeling of entering the far western Himalayan region.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Simikot Hilsa

The next stage uses a helicopter from Simikot to Hilsa, a small border settlement near Tibet.

From Hilsa, the route continues into Tibet and drives toward Purang or Taklakot, where the altitude becomes more serious.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Simikot Hilsa

Purang/Taklakot is an important acclimatization stop before moving deeper into the Kailash region.

The body needs time to adjust because the journey quickly rises above 3,500 metres and later reaches the high Tibetan plateau.

purang taklakot Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Simikot Hilsa

This is one reason the trip is planned for 14 days instead of being forced into a shorter schedule.

A rushed itinerary may look attractive on paper, but the combination of flights, helicopter movement, border crossing, and high altitude makes proper pacing much safer and more comfortable.

mount kailash

Lake Mansarovar is one of the most beautiful and meaningful parts of the journey.

The lake sits on the Tibetan plateau with wide open views, blue water, dry hills, and the distant presence of Mount Kailash.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Simikot Hilsa

Many visitors come for spiritual reasons, while others come for the landscape, culture, silence, and sense of remoteness.

Some travellers may choose to offer prayers or spend quiet time near the lake, while others simply enjoy the scenery and atmosphere.

gauri kund dolma la pass

The package should stay flexible and respectful because people visit Mansarovar for different reasons.

From Lake Mansarovar, the route continues to Darchen, the main base town for the Kailash Kora. Darchen is where travellers prepare for the walking section around Mount Kailash.

The Kora usually takes three days and is the hardest part of the journey.

The first day takes you from Yamadwar toward Dirapuk, with close views of the north face of Mount Kailash if the weather is clear.

The second day crosses Dolma La Pass, the highest and most physically demanding point of the route.

While, the third day completes the Kora and returns toward Darchen before driving back toward Purang.

The Dolma La Pass day is the main challenge of this tour.

The pass rises above 5,600 metres, where the air is thin, the weather can change quickly, and every step feels slower.

The trail itself does not require technical climbing, but the altitude, cold wind, rocky ground, long walking hours, and emotional weight of the journey make it a serious high mountain day.

Travellers must follow the guide’s advice, walk slowly, drink enough water, and avoid pushing beyond their condition.

Horse or yak support may be available locally, but it should not be guaranteed in advance because local rules, availability, and weather can change.

After completing the Kailash Kora, the journey returns through Purang, Hilsa, Simikot, Nepalgunj, and Kathmandu.

This return section is also weather dependent, especially because helicopter flights between Hilsa and Simikot and flights between Simikot and Nepalgunj depend on visibility and aircraft operation.

For this reason, travellers should keep some flexibility in their international flight plan and understand that delays are possible in the western Nepal and Tibet border region.

This trip is suitable for physically fit travellers, spiritual travellers, culture lovers, high altitude adventure seekers, and guests looking for a more unusual Kailash route from Nepal.

It is not suitable for people who want a simple luxury holiday or a fully predictable road trip.

The route is remote, weather dependent, and physically demanding during the Kora section.

However, for travellers who understand the nature of the journey, it can become one of the most powerful travel experiences in the Himalayas.

The best time for the Kailash Mansarovar Tour via Simikot Hilsa is generally from late spring to early autumn, when the high passes, border route, and flight conditions are more suitable.

Even during the best months, mountain weather can still affect flights, helicopters, road access, and the Kora schedule.

In simple words, this is a meaningful route for travellers who want to reach Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar through the remote Nepal side instead of using the standard overland Kyirong route.

It combines Kathmandu preparation, Nepalgunj, Simikot, Hilsa, the Tibet border, Purang, Lake Mansarovar, Darchen, Mount Kailash Kora, Dolma La Pass, and return through western Nepal.

Altitude Range and Character

Section Altitude Range Terrain Character
Kathmandu and Nepalgunj 150 m to 1,350 m City stay, lowland travel, flights, document checking, route briefing, and final preparation
Simikot and Hilsa route 2,910 m to around 3,640 m Remote Humla region, mountain airstrip, helicopter transfer, dry border valley, and rugged western Nepal scenery
Taklakot acclimatization Around 3,900 m Tibetan plateau town, thin air, border movement, acclimatization, and preparation for higher travel
Lake Mansarovar and Darchen 4,590 m to 4,670 m Open Tibetan plateau, sacred lake scenery, wide horizons, Mount Kailash views, and Kora preparation
Kailash Kora section 4,670 m to 5,630 m High altitude walking, rocky trail, cold wind, Dirapuk, Dolma La Pass, Zuthulphuk, and basic guesthouses
Return through Hilsa and Simikot 3,900 m down to 1,350 m Border return, helicopter transfer, domestic flights, weather dependent travel, and final return to Kathmandu

Difficulty Overview

Factor Level Notes
Physical demand Challenging Most days are travel based, but the Kailash Kora requires long walking at high altitude
Maximum altitude High Dolma La Pass reaches around 5,630 m and is the hardest point of the journey
Technical difficulty Low to Moderate No climbing gear is required, but rocky trail, cold weather, and thin air make the Kora demanding
Altitude risk High Several nights are spent above 3,900 m, so slow pacing, hydration, and acclimatization are important
Weather dependency High Flights, helicopters, roads, border movement, and the Kora can be affected by weather and local conditions
Comfort level Basic to Moderate Kathmandu and Nepalgunj are comfortable, while Mansarovar and Kora guesthouses are more basic

Best Season and Travel Conditions

Season Travel Feel Important Notes
Mid May to June Good early season window with improving access and active Kailash movement Weather can still be cold at high altitude, especially around Mansarovar, Dirapuk, and Dolma La Pass
July to August Main Kailash travel season with warmer high altitude conditions Simikot and Hilsa flights or helicopters can still face delay because of monsoon weather in Nepal
September Clearer sky, sharper mountain views, and a cleaner post monsoon atmosphere One of the better months for views, but border rules, flights, and local conditions still need flexibility

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu

  • Altitude:1,350m
  • Accommodation: Three Star Hotel in Kathmandu

Your journey begins with arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. After completing airport formalities, our representative will receive you and transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day is kept easy for rest, recovery, and basic preparation after your international flight. In the evening, you meet the team for a short briefing about the route, documents, flights, helicopter movement, Tibet border crossing, altitude, accommodation, meals, and safety during the Kailash Mansarovar Tour via Simikot Hilsa.

Day

Trip Preparation and Documentation Day in Kathmandu

  • Altitude: 1,350 m
  • Meal: Breakfast
  • Accommodation: Standard Three Star Hotel in Thamel

Today is kept for trip preparation, document checking, and final coordination before leaving Kathmandu. The team reviews your passport, visa process, permit details, health condition, luggage plan, and high altitude travel requirements. Depending on the schedule, you may have free time for last minute shopping, currency exchange, or a short cultural visit around Kathmandu. This preparation day is important because the journey crosses remote western Nepal and enters Tibet, where travel rules, group movement, and permits must be handled carefully.

Day 3

Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj

  • Altitude: 150 m
  • Flight Duration: 45 to 55 minutes
  • Flight Distance: 370 Km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Hotel in Nepalgunj

After breakfast, you transfer to the domestic airport and fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. The flight takes you from the hill valley of Kathmandu to the warm plains of western Nepal. Nepalgunj is a busy lowland city and the main flight connection point for the remote Humla region. After arriving, you transfer to the hotel and rest. The rest of the day is used for checking luggage, preparing for the Simikot flight, and adjusting to the travel schedule before entering the high mountain section.

Day 4

Fly from Nepalgunj to Simikot

  • Altitude: 2,910 m
  • Flight Duration: 45 to 60 minutes
  • Flight Distance: 208 Km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Hotel in Simikot

Early in the morning, you take a scenic flight from Nepalgunj to Simikot, the district headquarters of Humla. The flight rises from the lowland plains into remote mountain terrain, giving a clear change in landscape and altitude. Simikot is a small mountain town and one of the most important gateways for the Hilsa route toward Tibet. After arrival, the day is kept light for rest, short walking, and acclimatization. Since the journey now moves above 2,900 metres, it is important to drink water, walk slowly, and avoid unnecessary physical stress.

Day 5

Helicopter from Simikot to Hilsa and Drive to Purang/Taklakot

  • Altitude: 3,900 m
  • Fly Duration: 15 to 25 minutes
  • Fly Distance: 50 Km
  • Drive Duration: Around 1 to 2 hours
  • Drive Distance: 20 to 30 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Hotel in Purang

Today you take a helicopter from Simikot to Hilsa, a small border settlement near Tibet. This is one of the most dramatic parts of the journey because the route flies across remote Humla scenery and lands close to the border. After completing border formalities, you enter Tibet and continue by vehicle toward Purang or Taklakot. The altitude gain becomes more serious today, so the rest of the day is kept simple. After arriving at the hotel or guesthouse, you rest, drink enough water, and allow your body to adjust to the Tibetan plateau.

Day 6

Acclimatization Day in Purang or Taklakot

  • Altitude: 3,900 m
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Hotel in Purang

This day is kept for acclimatization before moving toward Lake Mansarovar and the higher Kailash region. Purang or Taklakot is an important stop because the route has already crossed into high altitude territory. You may take a short walk around the town, visit local markets if time and rules allow, or simply rest at the hotel. The guide will check the group’s condition and brief everyone about the coming days. This day is not wasted time. It helps reduce altitude risk before Mansarovar, Darchen, and the Kailash Kora.

Day 7

Drive from Purang to Lake Mansarovar

  • Altitude: 4,590 m
  • Drive Duration: 3 to 4 hours
  • Drive Distance: 90 to 100 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Guesthouse near Lake Mansarovar or Chiu Gompa Area

After breakfast, you drive across the open Tibetan plateau toward Lake Mansarovar. The scenery becomes wide, dry, and spacious, with distant mountains, empty valleys, and strong high altitude light. As you approach the lake, the landscape becomes more powerful and peaceful. Lake Mansarovar is known for its clear water, open horizon, and deep spiritual importance to many traditions. Travellers can spend time near the lake, take photos, walk gently, or simply enjoy the silence and scenery. The overnight stay is basic, but the setting is unforgettable.

Day 8

Explore Lake Mansarovar and Drive to Darchen

  • Altitude: 4,670 m
  • Drive Duration: 1 to 2 hours
  • Drive Distance: Around 90 to 100 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Guesthouse near Lake Mansarovar or Chiu Gompa Area

Today you spend more time around Lake Mansarovar before continuing to Darchen, the main base town for the Kailash Kora. Some travellers may choose quiet reflection, personal prayers, or a gentle walk near the lake, while others may simply enjoy the views of the plateau and Mount Kailash region. After the lake visit, you drive to Darchen and prepare for the walking section. The guide will explain the Kora route, luggage plan, porter or yak arrangements if available, walking pace, altitude safety, and the conditions expected during the next three days.

Day 9

Drive from Darchen to Yamadwar and Trek to Dirapuk

  • Altitude: 4,900 m
  • Travel Duration: 30 to 45 minutes
  • Travel Distance: 8 to 10 km
  • Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hours
  • Trek Distance: 12 to 14 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Guesthouse in Dirapuk

After breakfast, you drive from Darchen to Yamadwar and begin the first day of the Kailash Kora. The trail gradually follows the valley toward Dirapuk, with wide views, rocky terrain, prayer flags, and the strong presence of Mount Kailash ahead. This day is not as difficult as the Dolma La crossing, but the altitude makes every step slower. If the weather is clear, the north face of Mount Kailash can be one of the most memorable sights of the entire journey. Dirapuk is a basic overnight stop with simple facilities.

Day 10

Trek from Dirapuk to Zuthulphuk via Dolma La Pass

  • Altitude: 5,630 m at Dolma La Pass and 4,790 m at Zuthulphuk
  • Trek Duration: 8 to 10 hours
  • Trek Distance: 18 to 22 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Guesthouse in Zuthulphuk

This is the hardest and highest day of the journey. You start early from Dirapuk and climb slowly toward Dolma La Pass, which reaches around 5,630 metres. The trail is steep, cold, rocky, and physically demanding because of the thin air and long walking hours. After crossing the pass, the route descends toward the Zuthulphuk side. You must walk carefully, conserve energy, and follow the guide’s instructions throughout the day. Reaching Zuthulphuk brings a strong sense of relief after completing the most serious section of the Kailash Kora.

Day 11

Complete Kailash Kora and Drive to Purang

  • Altitude: 3,900 m
  • Trek Duration: 3 to 4 hours
  • Trek Distance: 10 to 12 km
  • Drive Duration: 3 to 4 hours
  • Drive Distance: 110 to 120 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Guesthouse in Purang

The final walking section of the Kailash Kora is easier than the previous day. The trail follows the valley out from Zuthulphuk and gradually reaches the end point of the circuit. After completing the Kora, you meet the vehicle and drive back through Darchen toward Purang or Taklakot. The return to a lower altitude feels easier after the high pass crossing. Once you arrive, the rest of the day is for rest, warm food, and recovery. This day marks the completion of the main Kailash walking section.

Day 12

Drive to Hilsa and Helicopter to Simikot

  • Altitude: 2,910
  • Travel Duration: 1 to 2 hours
  • Travel Distance: 25 to 30 km
  • Fly Duration: 15 to 25 minutes
  • Fly Distance: 51 km
  • Meal: Breakfast and Lunch
  • Accommodation: Hotel in Simkot

After breakfast, you drive back toward the Tibet Nepal border and complete the required exit formalities. After crossing back to Hilsa, you take the helicopter flight to Simikot when weather and aircraft operation allow. This day is highly dependent on border timing, visibility, helicopter schedule, and local conditions. After arriving in Simikot, you return to the hotel or guesthouse and rest. The air may still feel high, but the altitude is lower than the Kailash region, which helps the body recover after the demanding Kora section.

Day 13

Fly from Simikot to Nepalgunj and Return to Kathmandu

  • Altitude: 1,350 m
  • Flight Duration: Around 45 to 60 minutes from Simikot to Nepalgunj and around 45 to 55 minutes from Nepalgunj to Kathmandu
  • Flight Distance: 208 km and 370 km, respectively
  • Meal: Breakfast and Lunch
  • Accommodation: Standard Three Star Hotel in Kathmandu

Today you take the return flight from Simikot to Nepalgunj, followed by a connecting flight back to Kathmandu if weather and flight schedules work as planned. The journey brings you from remote Humla back to the capital after completing the Kailash Mansarovar route through Simikot and Hilsa. After arriving in Kathmandu, you transfer to your hotel and enjoy a comfortable final night. The rest of the day is free for rest, shopping, packing, or a relaxed evening after the long high altitude journey.

Day 14

Final Departure

  • Meal: Breakfast

Your Kailash Mansarovar Tour via Simikot Hilsa ends today. Our representative will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport according to your international flight schedule. If your flight is later in the day, you may have free time for packing, resting, or a short walk around Kathmandu. You leave Nepal with memories of Kathmandu, Nepalgunj, Simikot, Hilsa, Purang, Lake Mansarovar, Darchen, Mount Kailash, Dolma La Pass, and the remote journey through western Nepal and Tibet.

Frequently Asked Questions

This route travels through Nepalgunj, Simikot, Hilsa, and the western Nepal border before entering Tibet. It feels more remote and adventurous than the regular Kyirong overland route, but it is also more weather dependent.

No, this package is suitable for spiritual travellers, culture lovers, nature seekers, and adventure guests. Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar are sacred places, but the journey is written as a balanced travel experience.

The trip is challenging mainly because of altitude, remote travel, and the Kailash Kora. The hardest section is the Dolma La Pass day above 5,600 metres.

The full Kora is the main goal, but it should depend on your health, altitude condition, weather, and local rules. If needed, travellers may rest or stay in Darchen instead of continuing.

The highest point is Dolma La Pass at around 5,630 metres. It is not technical climbing, but the thin air, cold wind, rocky trail, and long walking hours make it demanding.

Taklakot helps the body adjust before moving higher toward Lake Mansarovar, Darchen, Dirapuk, and Dolma La Pass. This rest day is important for safer high altitude travel.

Kathmandu and Nepalgunj have comfortable hotels, while Simikot, Taklakot, Mansarovar, Darchen, Dirapuk, and Zuthulphuk are more basic. Remote guesthouses may have limited heating, hot water, charging, and Wi Fi.

No, flights and helicopters can be delayed by weather, visibility, aircraft operation, border timing, or local conditions. Flexibility is important on the Simikot Hilsa route.

Travellers need a valid passport, Nepal visa, China Group Visa or applicable China entry document, Tibet Travel Permit, and Nepal side route permits as required by current rules.

Horse, yak, or porter support may be available at extra cost, but it depends on local availability and regulations. It should not be treated as guaranteed.

Yes, altitude sickness is a real concern because the route spends several nights above 3,900 metres and crosses Dolma La Pass. Walk slowly, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and follow the guide’s advice.

The itinerary may be adjusted if weather affects flights, helicopters, border movement, roads, or the Kora. Extra nights, meals, transport, or flight changes caused by delays may cost extra.

This trip is not suitable for travellers who cannot handle high altitude, basic guesthouses, long travel days, or uncertain flight schedules. Anyone with serious health concerns should consult a doctor before booking.
