Langtang Valley Ganja-La Pass trek offers you wonderful mountain views, snowy high passes, ancient religious villages, the stunning Langtang region along with Helambu’s valleys, and a glimpse into how people live in tune with nature. The Ganja-La Pass trek takes you across the snow-laden Ganja La Pass (5130m), which divides the busier trekking routes of Langtang from the more serene paths leading to Helambu. This trek also allows you the chance to immerse in areas untouched by human activity.

Located northeast of Kathmandu Valley, the Ganja-La Pass Trekking is the toughest trekking route in the Langtang Region. This thrilling hike takes you through narrow gorges, abundant bamboo and rhododendron forests, magnificent waterfalls, and the snow-covered Himalayan Mountains. You will get some stunning vistas of the Himalayas from the Ganja-La Pass Trek, one of which is the beautiful valley of Helambu. The numerous streams, forests, and lofty peaks provide a comfortable climate to this region. While crossing the Ganja La Pass, you will see Tamang and Sherpa cultures, Buddhist temples, and beautiful landscapes. In addition to incredible views of Naya Kanga, Langtang Lirung, Yala Top, and Ponggen Dopku, there are unforgettable sights waiting for you.

Before starting the 14-day itinerary for the Langtang Ganja La Pass Trek, your journey begins with a scenic route lasting about 6 to 7 hours from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. Next, your journey will start from Syabrubesi by leading a Lama community towards the enchanting Langtang village and Kyanjin Gompa. West, north, and east are the directions where Kyanjin Gompa is Lorraine from by Langtang Lirung, Yala, Dorje Lakpa, Urkeinmang, Loenpo Gang, and Kangchenpo respectively. You will need to spend some time acclimatizing in Kyanjin Gompa as you ascend Tserko RI. Kyangjin Gompa valley and riverbeds are nice to see, and you can uncover them where you have your base in Kyangjin Gompa. Carry sufficient food for a couple of days, and after Kyanjin Gompa, you can camp. Carry your supply as firewood is prohibited.

Your journey continues along the trail to reach the highest point in Langtang Valley, the Ganjala Pass (5130m). From the summit of the pass, you are rewarded with amazing views of Langtang Lirung and Shishapangma in Tibet. You will be crossing the pass using a rope for safety as the last 100 meters are very steep and dangerous. For about one km, the downward slope is very steep and you also will have to be equipped with safety measures. After descending from Ganja-la pass, the route leads you down through Keldang, Dukpu, and Tarke Gyang. Since these places are Buddhist, there are many stupas, monasteries, and other structures. The landscapes and the villages Mactyihng, Sermathang, and Melamchi Pul Bazaar will continue mesmerizing you. The guide for traversing the Ganja La Pass in Langtang Valley will eventually end with a two-hour road trip to Kathmandu.

The guide will share details of the trekking route, safety, the required permits and what kind of things you should pack to bring with you. In case you still have some time on hand after your briefing you may consider exploring the lively Thamel streets to check out some of the trekking supplies or equipment that you might need for your trekking in the Himalayas.

Day 2

Drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi

  • Altitude: 1,610 m
  • Drive Duration: Approximately 6-7 hours
  • Drive Distance: 139 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tea house

On this day you will kick off your journey and make a scenic drive from Kathmandu towards Syabrubesi, which you can reach in about four to five hours, and this beautiful mountain village is the starting point for all trekkers heading to the Langtang region.

The roads are quite narrow and winding, but you pass by the Trishuli River and on the route to Syabrubesi you will also be able to admire several charming view points such as terraced fields, small villages, waterfalls, and dense forest that make the countryside seem even greener and more beautiful. At this altitude, it seems that nature has not had much human touch, and this has kept the natural beauty of the region intact which results in a peaceful atmosphere that you can enjoy.

After your arrival, you are advised to stay for the night, and the best place to stay would be a family-run teahouse in Syabrubesi, where you have the perfect chance to talk with some locals or spend the night beneath the stars before setting off on your trek early next morning.

Day 3

Trek from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel

  • Altitude: 2,500 m
  • Trek Duration: 7-8 hours
  • Trek Distance: 10.6 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tea house

On the first day, you will start your trek, and the trail is quite exciting as you will be passing suspension bridges that are part of the trail of Langtang Khola. The forest in the valley is dominated by a dense mix of bamboo, maple, oak, and rhododendron, which gives out a nice aroma if the wind hits right.

As you follow the trail on your walk through these beautiful forests, you may come across wild monkeys such as langurs, colorful birds, and even a rare red panda.

The trail ends with a walk through a forest path that is so quiet that all you can hear is the rustle of the forest, which makes it even clearer that nature has the upper hand here and man does not even leave any trace of his presence. The journey is completed at the Lama Hotel, which is nestled among a peaceful forest and mountain rivers.

Day 4

Trek from Lama Hotel to Langtang Village

  • Altitude: 3,430 m
  • Trek Duration: 5-6 hours
  • Trek Distance: 14.8 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tea house

Ghoda Tabela is the first stop as the valley gradually opens up and a magnificent view of the Snowy Himalayas is revealed to the eye that seems to be staring with awe through the window of the car. Along the way, the view is absolutely amazing – the snow-capped peaks, the grazing yak fields, and the prayer flags that are floating in the mountain breeze will never get old and be your best friends. You continue to enjoy the natural beauties in the alpine regions before finally arriving at Langtang, a traditional village of the Tamangs who after the 2015 devastating earthquake have been able to rebuild their homes.

This evening is set aside for learning about Tibetan culture and experiencing warm and heartfelt hospitality from Nepali people.

Day 5

Trek from Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa

  • Altitude: 3,870 m
  • Trek Duration: 3-4 hours
  • Trek Distance: 7 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tea house

Kyanjin Gompa, the religious center of Langtang Valley and a great place to stay, was your destination at the end of the long and scenic day’s adventure.

Kyanjin Gompa trail is a little short but still, it will be a very beautiful route for you to have a look at all kinds of traditional stone houses, ancient mani wall, glacial streams etc., after which lunch will be served in Kyanjin.

The centuries-old Buddhist monastery is an absolute highlight. After a short walk you will reach the monastery which is perched on a ridge that offers sweeping views of the valley and surrounding mountains. In the town of Kyanjin, you can make visits at different points including the famous Yak Cheese Factory located on an elevated land. Here, you are able to experience the making of Yak Cheese using an animal whose milk can only be collected by milking twice a week from one head of yak. The mountain scenery together with Kyanjin town makes this spot among the most stunning sites in all of Langtang ‍‌‍‍‌Valley.

Day 6

Acclimatization and Exploration at Kyanjin Gompa

  • Altitude: 4,773 m
  • Trek Duration: 8-9 hours
  • Trek Distance: 10 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tea house

Spending one day for taking rest and nature appreciation is the best option on the 6th day of this trek. Before setting off, you may also like to go to the famous Kyanjin Gompa to take part in Morning Prayer. For something different, you can try for reaching Tserko RI, the second-highest point of the Langtang Ganja-La Pass Trek.

This quick yet quite thrilling climb to this place will unveil the most spectacular scenes of the snow caps. Apart from other summits of the mountains, Kinshung, Yansa Tsenji, and the whole Langtang range can be seen from here. For Tsergo RI, think of going to Kyanjin RI. Compared to the Tsergo RI, Kyanjin RI is near and the way up is half the length, but it is still a pretty tough climb. You are at 4,773 meters/15,659 ft when you reach Kyanjin RI.

Whatever route you pick, the breathtaking sights of the snow-draped mountains, vast valleys and icy lakes are sure to impress. The scenery at Kyanjin RI is just as spectacular as that from Tsergo RI. You will be staying another night at the guesthouse in Kyanjin ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌Gompa.

Day 7

Trek from Kyanjin Gompa to Ngegang

  • Altitude: 4,150 m
  • Trek Duration: 5-6 hours
  • Trek Distance: 11 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tea house

Continuing along the Langtang Ganja La Pass trekking trail, there are no settlements or agricultural places in this section as the journey progresses. After the first 30 minutes, the path lowers until it comes to a suspension bridge. Once you have crossed the Langtang Khola, you will be climbing a path flanked by juniper surrounded by beautiful Himalayan wilderness. Approximately after 5 hours of walking you will get to Nyengang Kharka with superb views of Langtang Lirung and the glacier. Here you will have to find your own accommodation and meals.

Water shortage is something you might face at times. However, this day is filled with lovely mountain scenes and natural beauty which will be a sharp contrast to the next day. The hike will be hard because of the altitude. Besides that, it may take longer to travel the route during the winter because of the snow.

Day 8

Cross Ganja La Pass and Trek to Keldang from Ngegang

  • Altitude: 5,130 m
  • Trek Duration: 8 hours
  • Trek Distance: 16 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tea house

Today’s main challenge is reaching Ganja La Pass, where you’ll ascend to elevations topping 5000 meters. For much of the year, snow covers the high point of Ganja La Pass. When you stand atop this rocky ridge at Ganja La Pass, you are rewarded with truly striking mountain vistas.

The walk might be tough, but the pictures along the route will take your breath away with their grandeur. Carry all your gears along with you, especially some energizing snacks and water. It is best to begin the trek towards Ganja La Pass before the sun gets strong in order to avoid becoming tired too quickly. Make sure you are taking deep breaths and also keep your cool since this will be without a doubt one of the hardest days of trek for you. After the pass, a short stream is coming up by a way that descends. Following the stream, you will come to Keldang, where an overnight stay in tents awaits.

Day 9

Trek from Keldang to Dukpu

  • Altitude: 4,080 m m
  • Trek Duration: 6 hours
  • Trek Distance: 9 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tea house

Today, the trekking path primarily descends alongside a lofty ridgeline from Keldang to Dhukpa. However, the ridge walk is very beautiful and interesting, and besides, it has an amazing view. While hiking through the forests, mountains, and grasslands, you descend Until now you have dropped a significant amount of height.

To get to Dukpu, the summer village of Helambu folks, you will definitely need to take a further descent over a ridge and walk after that through the forests and meadows. If you are lucky enough to meet someone in the forest, you will almost certainly set up a tent camp, since it is by nature so solitary, peaceful, and it is an amazing experience to discover the Himalayan ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌majesty.

Day 10

Trek from Dukpu to Tarke Gyang

  • Altitude: 2,740m
  • Trek Duration: 6 hours
  • Trek Distance: 10 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tea house

Tarkeghyang marks the target for today on the Langtang Ganja La Pass journey. Before reaching a Sherpa village, you’ll cross the Melamchi Khola. Your trek will offer you the most beautiful and unforgettable view of Himalayan peaks glittering in sunshine. From this pass, one can also see the Annapurna region, Mt. Everest region, and other mountain ranges. Along the trail, you will encounter historic Buddhist temples and scenic Sherpa settlements as the route descends through forests of pine and blossoming rhododendrons to the small herder’s settlement of Tarkeghyang.

These places have a good number of friendly, happy inhabitants. As most of the villagers are of the Helmu caste, the village is often recognized by its short form Helambu. At Tarkeghyang you are going to sleep in a small lodge/hotel.

Day 11

Trek from Tarke Gyang to Sermathang

  • Altitude: 2,610m
  • Trek Duration: 5 hours
  • Trek Distance: 9 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tea house

On the way to Sermathang, the trek route winds beneath rhododendron trees through pretty villages, farms and monasteries. The path leads across a broad valley between Parachin and the small Sherpa settlement of Gangyul. The inhabitants of this village are followers of Drukpa Kagyu Buddhism which is also the state religion of Bhutan. Another pretty Sherpa settlement Shermathang, is a good place for visitors to see several old monasteries and have a view of the Jugal Himal mountain range.

Day 12

  • Trek Duration: 6 hours
  • Trek Distance: 17 km

When you leave the village of Sermanthang, you will pass through lovely villages like Kakani and Thimbu. The vegetation is also changing as you walk through the subtropical zone. After you cross several bridges and pass through a few small villages with chortens and mani walls, you will reach Melamchi Pul Bazaar, which is a Sherpa community. Frequently Asked Questions

A major trekking route in Nepal, the Ganja La Pass adventure begins in the scenic Langtang Valley and finishes in Helambu, a region celebrated for its rich culture and stunning mountain scenery. This trek, which lasts for 12 days, takes you through thick forests, historic Tamang villages, alpine meadows, glaciers, and into the isolated Himalaya as you make your way toward the final section before reaching the Ganja La Pass (5,122 m / 16,804 ft). Unlike Nepal’s primary trekking destinations, this route tends to be overlooked by most travelers, providing a genuine Himalayan experience ideal for those wishing to appreciate the mountain vistas and engage deeply with Nepalese culture while experiencing fewer crowds.

The Ganja La Pass journey is considered extremely challenging, making it best suited for those already accustomed to hiking at higher elevations. The trek’s itinerary demands a high level of fitness, as you’ll be facing steep ascents, difficult rocky trails, walking on glaciers, and ultimately a strenuous crossing at a mountain pass. It’s essential to be in strong physical condition, have ample endurance, and allow appropriate time for acclimatization. While you won’t need technical mountaineering expertise for this trek, hiring a skilled guide and using reliable trekking equipment can go a long way in ensuring both your comfort and safety on the trail.

The highest elevation you will conquer on this trek is the Ganja La Pass itself, standing at 5,122 m (16,804 ft). Reaching this altitude is no small feat, but it rewards you with awe-inspiring views of peaks like Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, Yala Peak, and Dorje Lakpa, among others, which truly highlight the journey. Given the height, it is crucial to come prepared and to ascend gradually, giving your body time to adapt and lowering the risk of altitude-related illness.

Optimal months for trekking in the Ganja La Pass region are spring (March through May) and autumn (September to November), thanks to favorable conditions such as limited rainfall, comfortably cool weather, and crisp, panoramic vistas. During the spring months, you’ll be treated to blooming rhododendrons and a variety of mountain flowers, transforming the landscape into a colorful tapestry. Autumn brings better clarity, milder nighttime temperatures that make trekking more comfortable, and ideal weather throughout the journey. While it is possible to make the trek during winter, this season is recommended only for very experienced trekkers due to challenges like deep snow and extremely cold conditions. Monsoon in summer generally brings heavy rain, making the trails slippery and less enjoyable, so that period is usually discouraged for those planning the trek.

Absolutely. Having experience with trekking beforehand is highly recommended to successfully tackle the demands of this route, as it features intense hiking, exposure to high elevations, and traverses remote Himalayan landscapes. Most people who have previously completed routes such as Everest Base Camp, the Annapurna Circuit, or the Manaslu Circuit find themselves well-prepared for this challenge. To get ready, consider regular walks, cardiovascular activities, and strength-training exercises in the weeks before your trip—these preparations will help you face both the physical and mental challenges of such a demanding adventure.

Yes. Because the trek ascends to heights above 5,000 m, there is an inherent risk of altitude sickness that every trekker must take seriously. This is why our route includes a dedicated acclimatization day at Kyanjin Gompa, giving your body valuable time to adjust to the thin air. We also advise drinking plenty of fluids, moving at a slow and steady pace, avoiding alcohol, choosing nutritious food, and listening to your guide’s recommendations. Our experienced guides will assist you in recognizing symptoms of altitude sickness and will prioritize your well-being throughout the ‍‌‍‍‌trek.

The trek will require from you the two permits only:

  • Langtang National Park Entry Permit
  • TIMS card (a Trekkers’ Information Management System card)

These permits not only support the work of conservation but also help in maintaining trekker security. Booking with Nepal Royal Treks allows you to get all the necessary permits done well prior to your trek so that you can enjoy the trek without any trouble.

It is strongly advised that beginners don’t attempt hiking the Ganja La Pass Trail. Since the trek passes a very steep terrain, it is at a high altitude, and there are no proper facilities, the trek is better suited for people with enough trekking experience and good physical condition. Should you decide to do your first trek, we suggest you start from simple and easily managed ones, such as Langtang Valley Trek, Mardi Himal Trek, or the Annapurna Base Camp Trek; once you successfully complete these, you may think of tackling Ganja La Pass.

Yes. A professional, licensed trekking guide is not only very helpful and necessary but it might also be a legal requirement in Nepal. The route beyond Kyanjin Gompa is isolated, poorly maintained, and requires crossing a glacier as well as navigating mountain passes, which can be quite challenging for a beginner without proper equipment and skills. Having a guide with you ensures your safety as well as the overall enjoyment, he will provide you with valuable local knowledge and help you find lodges, arrange transport if necessary, and support you in case of medical emergencies. Nepal Royal Treks can arrange professional and government-authorized guides throughout the journey.

The available accommodation is mainly a traditional type of tea houses along the Langtang Valley, which, apart from having the local charm, also provide the trekkers with clean and simple yet cozy rooms, which come with twin beds, bedding essentials like blankets along with the shared bathroom option. If the situation is very isolated (like around Ganja La Pass area), camping may be your only choice, depending on the conditions of the trail and the availability of lodges, you need to keep a tent and sleeping bags. Moreover, the local tea houses are where you get a taste of the original Himalaya hospitality and have a peek into the traditional life of the mountain people.

Different kinds of cuisine such as Nepali, Tibetan, and global foods can be eaten in the tea houses at the Langtang Valley Trek region. Among the most frequent offerings, there are: Dal bhat (a type of food that consists of rice, lentils, vegetables, and sauce), fried rice, noodles, potatoes, Tibetan bread, pancakes, eggs, porridge, along with tea, coffee, etc. If you want to keep your energy levels up while trekking for many hours a day, Dal bhat is a good option because it is very filling, rich in nutrients, and often it is served free of charge so you can have as much as you desire.

Some of the most crucial equipments for trekking: waterproof hiking shoes, warm garments, thermal wear, a jacket filled with feathers, waterproof outer layers, gloves, a warm cap, sunglasses, the skin protector cream, the sleeping bag, trekking poles, a water bottle with the capacity enough to carry the refill or maybe even the filter, a headlamp to use the light in the dark, and an individual set of first aid tools. You had better make sure that you put yourself in warm and high-quality gear, given the fact that it can literally be as cold, if not even colder than the freezing point in places close to Ganja La Pass. That is not only for personal comfort but more importantly for the sake of safety!

A source of electricity can be found in most villages along the Langtang Valley, but in general, charging of your phone might require you to be willing to pay quite a sum. While it may be technically possible to access the Internet in some tea shops, the speed of connection is not good and may also not be consistent because you are in a very remote place in the mountains. The coverage of cellular phones is there in some areas; however, it is severely restricted where you can only make calls or receive the signal at higher places or close to the ‍‌‍‍‌passes.

This trek opens you up to spectacular views that include some of Nepal’s finest Himalayan peaks, such as Ganesh Himal, Dorje Lakpa (6,966m), Langtang Lirung (7,227m), Yala Peak, Naya Kanga, Ganchenpo, Langshisa Ri, and various Himalayas of Tibet too.

When you reach the top of Ganja La Pass, you’ll find yourself at one of the most stunning panoramic vantage points in the Langtang region.

Definitely. It is a must that the travel insurance you choose covers high-altitude trekking till at least 5,500m  and also emergency helicopter evacuation. It should also take care of medical treatment, trip cancellation, and the personal belongings, the whole of the time you are on the trek with Nepal Royal Tourism.  If an insurance policy is there, the trekker can rest assured because in the event of an emergency, the insurance coverage will assist and handle the situation quickly and efficiently.

On most of these days, trekkers are expected to trek between 5 to 8 hours depending upon trails, weather, group pace. The one day when our group will be crossing Ganja La Pass will probably be the most challenging day, which usually starts at very early hours of morning and a full day trekkers’ experience. Throughout the trekkers’ journey, your expert guide will manage a suitable speed, while allowing you plenty of rest breaks for drinking water, stretching, or taking pictures!

In fact, drinking water is available. The trail offers plenty of places from which you can get water. Boiled or filtered water can be bought at tea-house, alternatively, you could refill from natural water sources after treating with purification tablets, UV treatment devices, or hand held water filters. By carrying a reusable water container you can minimize plastic waste and support responsible trekking.

Choosing Ganja La Pass as your trekking adventure means entering a wilder and more secluded journey compared to the usual Langtang Valley Trek.

Offering breathtaking mountain panoramas, the chance to cross a major high-altitude pass, enjoy tranquil alpine settings, meet Tamang and Sherpa people, and visit the lovely Helambu region, this trek stands out as a truly special experience.

Those who like to avoid crowded trails and prefer true Himalayan adventures should definitely try Ganja La Pass

Yes, solo travelers are allowed. You should bear in mind, however, that given the difficult terrain as well as the latest changes in regulations, only those trekkers who are accompanied by a licensed guide can do this pass in trekking.

Traveling as the single person with a guide is, in fact, safer, and more besides, with the guide, the planning is easier. It is an occasion of meeting new friends through your trekking, and at the same time, you get a chance of exploring one of the most remote trekking areas in Nepal.

Nepal Royal Tourism gives trekkers a professionally managed treking tour with the guidance of certified local guides. We furnish you with a thoroughly organized itinerary, open price policy, and special arrangement made just for you!

We help and do the permits, get the transport arrangements, make the accommodation bookings, and handle others so that you are just left with enjoying every minute of the trek in the Himalayas! Our group of expert trek leaders with a deep sense of care for their trekkers’ safety, commitment to eco-friendly tourism, and a focus on client satisfaction make your 15-day Ganja La ‍‌‍‍‌Pass.

Best Trek in the Langtang Region

This 14-day Ganja La Pass Trek exceeded my expectations. Kyanjin Gompa, the peaceful Langtang Valley, and the stunning mountain scenery were simply amazing. The itinerary was well planned, and the team at Nepal Royal Tourism Holiday provided excellent service from start to finish. I would happily recommend this trek to adventurous hikers.

The Ganja La Pass Trek was one of the most rewarding treks I’ve ever completed. The combination of remote trails, authentic Tamang culture, and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes made every day memorable. Nepal Royal Tourism Holiday organized everything perfectly, and our experienced guide made the journey safe and enjoyable. An excellent trekking company in Nepal
