abc trek with mardi himal and poon hill

The ABC Trek with Poon Hill and Mardi Himal is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the Annapurna region in a single journey.

Instead of following one trail and returning by the same route, this package brings together three of the most loved trekking sections in Nepal and shapes them into one balanced 17-day adventure.

The long yet rewarding trek combines the classic beauty of Annapurna Base Camp, the early sunrise magic of Poon Hill, and the peaceful ridge of Mardi Himal.

This way, travelers can enjoy a trek that feels varied, scenic, and deeply memorable from beginning to end.

The journey begins in Kathmandu and then gradually moves into the lower hills of western Nepal, where the landscape changes from city life to terraced farmland, green valleys, village settlements, and forest slopes.

The first part of the trek gives you a gentle introduction to the mountain environment, and undoubtedly you will enjoy every moment from the first day to the last day of the trek.

You pass through traditional villages, stone steps, suspension bridges, and local tea houses that reflect everyday life in the mountain ranges and hills.

These early days are not only about walking; they also help you settle into the pace of the Himalayas and let you slowly leave behind the noise of the lowlands.

One of the most beautiful parts of this trek is the natural variety along the route. The trail does not stay in one type of landscape for long.

You will get to move from open hill country into rhododendron forests, bamboo sections, narrow mountain paths, and then a higher mountainous landscape.

In spring, the forests can be especially colorful, with flowers blooming along the trail and fresh green growth covering the hillsides.

In other seasons, the same paths feel calm, quiet, and deeply atmospheric. This changing scenery is one of the reasons the trek feels so rich and complete.

Poon Hill adds one of the most famous highlights of the whole Annapurna region. The early morning climb to the viewpoint is short, but the reward is unforgiving.

As the sun rises, the mountains slowly begin to glow, revealing a wide panorama of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

It is one of those Himalayan moments that feels simple but stays with you for a long time. The viewpoint is popular because it gives such a strong mountain experience without requiring a difficult ascent, and it sets the tone beautifully for the rest of the trek.

From there, the route continues deeper into the Annapurna region and begins to feel more intense.

The trail toward Annapurna Base Camp leads through forested valleys, mountain villages, river sections, and steadily rising ground until you finally reach the sanctuary itself.

Annapurna Base Camp is one of the most powerful places in Nepal because the mountains surround you from all sides.

Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre, and the wider Annapurna massif rise can be seen from the camp, creating a scenery you won’t forget in your lifetime.

Standing there feels different from looking at mountains from below. You are inside them, and that is what makes the experience so special.

The Mardi Himal section gives this trek a quieter and more intimate finish. Compared to the busier ABC route, Mardi Himal feels calmer and more open, with a strong summit character and fewer crowds.

The trail gradually climbs through forested sections before opening into wide views of Machhapuchhre and the surrounding mountains.

This part of the trek has a more peaceful rhythm. The scenery becomes closer, the mountain faces feel more direct, and every bend in the trail seems to reveal a new angle of the Himalayas.

It is a very different feeling from the classic base camp route, and that contrast is part of what makes the full itinerary so rewarding.

Culturally, the trek is just as interesting as it is scenic. The Annapurna region is home to traditional hill communities, and the villages along the route still reflect a strong local identity.

Stone houses, terraced fields, prayer flags, monasteries, and family-run tea houses give the journey a warm and grounded character.

The trekking experience is not only about high peaks and dramatic views. It is also about the people who live in these mountains, the food they serve, the way they welcome travelers, and the simple daily life that continues in the shadow of the Himalayas.

This 17-day package is designed to give the journey enough space to breathe. It does not rush from one point to another.

Instead, it allows time for walking, resting, adjusting to altitude, and enjoying the scenery properly. That is important on a trek like this because the route has different moods.

Some days are steady and relaxed, while others include steeper climbs or longer descents.

The overall pacing makes the trek more comfortable and also more enjoyable, because you have time to notice the small details along the way, including the shape of the trail, the changing forests, the sound of rivers, the feel of the air, and the wide views that appear as you climb higher.

What makes this trek especially strong is the way it brings everything together. You get sunrise viewpoints, forest walks, traditional villages, high mountain scenery, and base camp atmosphere all in one route.

You also get the quieter ridge experience of Mardi Himal, which gives the trek a more complete feeling than a standard single-route trek.

For travelers who want a journey that feels full, scenic, and varied, this is an excellent choice.

The ABC Trek with Poon Hill and Mardi Himal is not just about reaching one destination. It is about moving through different layers of the Annapurna region and experiencing how the landscape, culture, and mountain atmosphere change along the way.

From Kathmandu to the foothills, from Poon Hill to Annapurna Base Camp, and from the forest trail to the Mardi ridge, this trek gives you a deep and memorable Himalayan experience that feels both classic and fresh at the same time.

Trip Highlights

  • Start with a trek that combines the classic Annapurna Base Camp route, the famous Poon Hill sunrise walk, and the quieter Mardi Himal trail into one varied Himalayan journey. The route keeps changing from villages and forests to mountain lands, so the scenery never feels repetitive
  • Wake up early to view the sunrise as Poon hill, one of the most famous viewpoints of the Annapurna region, opens the ranges of the Annapurna and the Dhauligiri ranges in a large panoramic Himalayan view. The climb is not too long, and the reward is the most memorable point of the Nepal scenery.
  • Arrive at Annapurna Base Camp and be within the close premises of great mountain basin surrounded by Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre.
  • Enjoy Hike of the Mardi Himal, thanks to its ridge walking nearer mountain and mountain views. The trail is favored by clear sceneries, and extraordinary Machhapuchhre and Annapurna range sceneries.
  • See beautiful rhododendron, oak, and bamboo woods, particularly on the lower part and middle of trail. This part can add life, color and a softer side to the trek before you open up to the mountains.
  • Pass between the villages of Gurung and Magar whereby the stone houses, terraced fields, prayer flags, and local tea houses offer a strong cultural touch to the trek.
  • Explore, relax or take a break at Jhinu Danda, a natural hot-spring offering natural break to those who have been on the trail. It is one of the nicest ways to rest tired legs before continuing or ending the trek
  • Stay in local run tea houses and lodges on the path, maintaining the experience simple, cosy and near mountain living. The rooms get basic in the higher levels but that is also what the true trekking experience is all about.
  • Enjoy the trek where altitude changes are well balanced, so that the upwards ascension does not seem sudden. Those tiny increases in altitude make the hike more accessible, and yet provide you with serious high-mountain scenery.
  • Wrap up your trek that gives you forest trails, sunrise viewpoints, deep Himalayan valleys, and glacier-country mountain scenery in one package. It is a full Annapurna Region experience for trekkers who want variety, culture, and big views without doing a single-note route.

Route Map for Annapurna Base Camp Trek with Poon Hill and Mardi Himal – 17 Days

Frequently Asked Questions

It is generally rated as a moderately demanding trek. Physically, the trekkers should be fit and able to walk throughout the day (about 5 to 7 hours) on mountain trails. To make the most of the journey, it would be beneficial if you had some trekking experience, although it is not a must.

You will reach Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 meters / 13,550 feet), which is a perfect place to witness the spectacular views of Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre, Hiunchuli, and other peaks in the Himalayas. But the Mardi Himal Base Camp is 4,500m.

Generally, the two best times to do the trek are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when the weather is steady, the sky is clear, and the mountains look amazing.

This plan allows for 17 days, during which trekkers can not only visit Poon Hill, Annapurna Base Camp, and Mardi Himal but also comfortably enjoy the local culture and scenic environment.

Not at all. Those with a good level of fitness can do well on this trekking route. To wake up your muscles for what’s coming you could indulge in some regular walking, hiking, or light fitness training before the trip.

Visitors must acquire an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and a TIMS Card along with the latest permits requirements by the Nepalese government.

There is still a possibility of suffering from altitude sickness. Proper acclimatization, keeping yourself well hydrated, and climbing slowly are ways to reduce risks.

Yes, you can definitely catch a flight instead of taking road trip. However, extra charges will be applicable due to change in the itinerary.

Definitely. There are very good tea houses and hostels available along the trekking route that offer meals, lodging, and other basic amenities.

You will be staying in local tea houses during the trek, and in Kathmandu and Pokhara, depending on your package, you can expect to be in tourist-standard hotels.

Tea houses serve a variety of meals including Dal Bhat, noodles, rice, pasta, soups, potatoes, pancakes, eggs, tea, coffee, and seasonal vegetables.

Yes, in most villages, you will find charging facilities. However, some places might ask for a small fee for electricity usage.

Wi-Fi can be found in numerous tea houses; however, at higher elevations and more isolated spots, the connection is likely to be slower.

You’ll need trekking boots, warm clothes, a waterproof jacket, a sleeping bag, a backpack, trekking poles, sunscreen, sunglasses, and your personal medications.

You should take out comprehensive travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking, emergency evacuation, and medical treatment.

A licensed trekking guide makes for a really great safety measure, and also by virtue of their local knowledge, makes the cultural experience more worthwhile. In addition to that, porters carry your luggage which can greatly enhance your enjoyment during the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌trek.

Absolutely. We at Nepal Royal Tourism Holiday could certainly tailor-make your travel plan as per your calendar, your level of fitness, and your personal choices of travel.

You can see the stunning large peaks of Annapurna I (8,091m), Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, Mardi Himal, and Dhaulagiri during the walk.

One can solo and join the group departures or book a private trek with a professional guide for a safe and enjoyable experience.

You will be a part of a trip to the best of the Annapurna region, including the view of the sunrise from Poon Hill, the iconic experience of Annapurna Base Camp, and the less-crowded Mardi Himal ridge.

We at Nepal Royal Tourism Holiday would provide you with the highly skilled local guides, the personalized services, the great competitive prices, the flexible itineraries, and 24/7 support that will make your trekking experience in Nepal ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌unforgettable.

    Great Mardi Himal Trek Experience

Mardi Himal was for me the highlight of the trek. Quietness, tranquility and getting to view the mountains at an extremely close distance were some of the things that made this place so wonderful. Nepal Royal Tourism was very thoughtful in including this along with the standard Annapurna Base Camp trek. The guide was knowledgeable and safety was always his priority. All in all, a wonderful trekking experience in Nepal.

  • Daniel Müller
    Top-Rated Nepal Trekking Company

Nepal Royal Tourism is a top-rated Nepal trekking company – and there is a reason for it! The 17-day Annapurna Base Camp trek via Poon Hill and Mardi Himal was very well managed. The itinerary was balanced, not too rushed , and we were able to fully admire each stop at our own pace. The views from Annapurna, Machapuchare, and Dhaulagiri were stunning throughout the trek.

  • Sophie Dubois
    Amazing Annapurna trekking experience

Memories of our trekking with Nepal Royal Tourism in Annapurna Base Camp are etched in my mind forever. One of the best places we have ever visited was Poon Hill for sunrise. Our guide was very calm and encouraging not to mention act very supportive when we had to push our limits. It was such a great feeling to be taken care of by the team at all times both from a safety and comfort point of view. A thoroughly enjoyable, stress-free, and well-planned tour.

  • Luca Bianchi
Perfect combination trek in Annapurna region

An Annapurna trek for 17 days is a complete package for any individual wanting an extraordinary experience. Nepal Royal Tourism took care of every detail such as permits, logistics and daily scheduling most commendably. Pampering the eyes with different sceneries, transitioning from green forests to high alpine landscapes was breathtaking The peaceful Mardi Himal trails contrast with the stunning glacier views at Annapurna Base Camp. This company comes with my highest recommendation

  • Emma Williams
Highly Professional Trekking Company in Nepal

Nepal Royal Tourism was our choice for organizing an Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal trekking trip. They were very professional in their method. Every step of the way, starting from the airport pickup in Kathmandu until our final day in Pokhara, was smooth without any hiccup. Our stays were comfortable, food was excellent and the guide was very informative when it came to local culture and mountains. Also, I liked the way the schedule was made in a way that there were popular as well as less crowded paths. This is a trustworthy trekking company in Nepal.

  • David Clark
Trek Again with Nepal Royal Tourism

This was my first trekking trip in Nepal and the very fact that it is not going to be my last is the best testimony for the service by Nepal Royal Tourism. Nepal Royal Tourism did a spectacular job and I will most certainly use their services again for my future trekking expeditions.

  • Grace Adams

  • Aria Young
    Beautiful Trek with Great Support

The trek was incredibly scenic and Nepal Royal Tourism provided excellent support throughout. Mardi Himal was a highlight for me. There were a few teahouses which were quite basic but that is what you should expect when trekking in the mountains.

  • Logan Hall
    Excellent Trekking Organization

Nepal Royal Tourism took care of all the arrangements with a high degree of professionalism. Itineraries, permits and daily plans were well thought out and didn’t cause any hassles at all during the trip. If you ever plan to go trekking in Nepal, these guys are your best.

  • Benjamin Lee
    Great Experience with Minor Delays

The guide was very informative and the itinerary selected was top class. Due to weather conditions, there were a couple of times when the team had to make a few quick adjustments, but they handled everything very well. I highly recommend this trekking adventure.

  • Sofia Hernandez
Words cannot describe the wonderful views

The trekking was tough but if you ask me it was totally worth the effort. Nepal Royal Tourism came through with great support; also, our guide kept us motivated all along. Words cannot describe the wonderful views we had at Annapurna Base Camp.
