muktinath temple tour by jeep

Muktinath Darshan by Jeep is a six-day pilgrimage and mountain journey that takes travellers from Kathmandu into the high Himalayan landscape of Mustang, with the sacred Muktinath Temple as the main destination.

The route is designed for pilgrims and travellers who want to experience Muktinath without undertaking a multi-day trek, while still getting to see the villages, river valleys, mountain roads and changing landscapes along the way.

The journey begins in Kathmandu, where you can settle into the city before beginning the overland pilgrimage.

Depending on your arrival time, an evening visit to Pashupatinath Temple can be arranged, giving the journey a natural religious beginning beside the Bagmati River.

The following morning, the road heads west from Kathmandu toward Pokhara, with an important pilgrimage stop at Manakamana Temple along the way.

The temple sits on a hill above the Trishuli River and is reached by cable car from the roadside station.

After Darshan and time around the temple complex, the journey continues toward Pokhara.

The drive itself is scenic, passing through river valleys, terraced hillsides, roadside settlements and changing mountain landscapes before reaching the lakeside city.

Pokhara provides a comfortable break between the long road stages.

Sitting at roughly 822 metres, the city is surrounded by green hills and backed by the Annapurna range, with Machhapuchhre often dominating the northern skyline when the weather is clear.

Depending on the final timing, there is an opportunity to spend the evening around Phewa Lake, explore Lakeside or simply rest before entering the much higher Mustang region.

From Pokhara, the journey becomes noticeably more adventurous as the Jeep follows the route toward Jomsom.

The road passes through Beni, Tatopani, Ghasa, Lete and Marpha, following the Kali Gandaki corridor deeper into the mountains.

The character of the landscape changes along the way. Green hills and waterfalls give way to steeper rock faces, drier slopes and increasingly dramatic Himalayan scenery.

After Beni, road conditions can become rough and uneven, so the journey should be regarded as a mountain-road adventure as well as a pilgrimage transfer.

Along this section, Marpha is one of the most distinctive settlements. Its whitewashed houses, stone-paved lanes and apple-growing tradition give the village a very different appearance from the lower hill towns.

The road then continues toward Jomsom, an important centre of Lower Mustang where the Kali Gandaki valley opens beneath the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

The main pilgrimage day begins from Jomsom and heads toward Kagbeni and Muktinath. Kagbeni is an atmospheric old settlement with narrow lanes, traditional stone-and-mud houses and strong Tibetan cultural influences.

From there, the road climbs toward Ranipauwa and the Muktinath pilgrimage area at approximately 3,8000 metres.

At Muktinath Temple, Hindu and Buddhist traditions come together within the same sacred landscape.

Pilgrims visit the main temple, the 108 Mukti Dhara water spouts, the two sacred kundas and Jwala Mai Temple, where the naturally occurring flame is an important part of the religious character of the site.

The surrounding barren Himalayan slopes and mountain backdrop make the pilgrimage experience completely different from the greener landscapes of Kathmandu and Pokhara.

The morning is dedicated to the pilgrimage, after which the Jeep begins the long descent through the Kali Gandaki Valley.

By returning to Pokhara in the evening, the following day can be used entirely for the journey back to Kathmandu.

The return journey to Pokhara retraces the mountain road through Jomsom, Marpha, Ghasa, Tatopani and Beni.

Seeing the same valley while travelling in the opposite direction often gives a different perspective, particularly as the road descends from the dry Mustang environment back toward the greener middle hills.

Second-last day takes the journey from Pokhara to Kathmandu, following the Prithvi Highway through river valleys, terraced hills and busy hill settlements.

After reaching Kathmandu, there is time to rest, explore Thamel, complete any final shopping before departure and enjoying Nepali cuisine one last time.

The final morning is kept simple, with breakfast followed by the airport transfer according to the international flight schedule.

After several days of mountain-road travel, the journey ends back in Kathmandu with the central pilgrimage complete. This six-day Muktinath journey is therefore more than a temple visit.

It combines Kathmandu’s religious heritage, Manakamana Darshan, Pokhara’s lakeside setting, the dramatic Kali Gandaki Valley, traditional Mustang settlements, Jomsom and Kagbeni, and the sacred Muktinath temple into one road-based pilgrimage.

It is especially suitable for travellers who want to reach Muktinath comfortably by Jeep while still experiencing the landscape and communities that make the journey there such an important part of the pilgrimage.

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu and Pashupatinath Darshan

  • Altitude: 1,350 m
  • Accommodation: Three-Star Hotel in Kathmandu

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative from Nepal Royal Tourism Holiday will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu. After check-in and some time to freshen up, the day can remain relaxed after your international journey.

If your arrival time allows, visit Pashupatinath Temple in the evening. Situated beside the Bagmati River, this sacred complex is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in Nepal, with numerous shrines, temple courtyards and riverside ghats forming part of the active religious environment. After the visit, return to your hotel for an overnight stay and a briefing about the road journey ahead.

Day 2

Drive Kathmandu to Pokhara via Manakamana Darshan

  • Altitude: Kathmandu 1,350 m | Pokhara approximately 822 m
  • Drive Distance: Approximately 200–210 km
  • Drive Duration: Around 6–8 hours depending on traffic and road conditions
  • Meals: Breakfast and Lunch
  • Accommodation: Three-Star Hotel in Pokhara
    Meals: Breakfast

After breakfast, begin the westward drive toward Pokhara. The road follows Nepal’s middle hills and river valleys, with terraced farmland, forested slopes, roadside markets and scattered villages appearing throughout the journey.

Much of the route follows the Trishuli and later the Marsyangdi river systems, with the surrounding landscape gradually becoming more mountainous as you approach Pokhara. There are suitable stops along the way for refreshments and lunch.

Among them is Manakamana Temple in Gorkha District, a sacred wish-fulfilling shrine dedicated to the Hindu goddess Bhagwati. We spend a couple of hours there before heading out for Pokhara.

After reaching Pokhara, check into your hotel and spend the evening around Phewa Lake and Lakeside. The atmosphere here is very different from Kathmandu, with the lake, surrounding hills and distant Himalayan skyline creating a relaxed setting before the long mountain-road journey to Jomsom.

Day 3

Drive from Pokhara to Jomsom

  • Altitude: Pokhara 822 m | Jomsom 2,743 m
  • Drive Distance: Approximately 175 km
  • Drive Duration: Around 7 to 9 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Accommodation: Lodge or Hotel in Jomsom
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Start early because today is one of the most scenic and adventurous road journeys of the trip. The Jeep leaves Pokhara and heads toward Beni, where the character of the road changes considerably.

From Beni, continue through the Kali Gandaki corridor, passing Tatopani, Ghasa, Lete and the increasingly rugged mountain landscape. After the lower, greener valleys, the scenery gradually becomes drier and more dramatic as you move toward Mustang. Waterfalls drop from the surrounding cliffs, the Kali Gandaki cuts deeply through the valley, and the enormous mountain walls begin to dominate the journey.

Continue through Marpha, famous for its whitewashed houses, stone-paved lanes and apple orchards, before reaching Jomsom, the main administrative and commercial centre of the Mustang region. Depending on arrival time, enjoy a short walk around Jomsom and its local market before settling into the hotel.

Day 4

Jomsom to Muktinath Darshan and Drive Back to Pokhara

  • Altitude: Jomsom 2,743 m | Muktinath 3,800 m | Pokhara 822 m
  • Drive Distance: Approximately 200 to 215 km total depending on the exact route and local transfers
  • Drive Duration: Around 9 to 11 hours total including the Muktinath visit
  • Local Transfer: Approximately 30 to 60 minutes each way between Jomsom and the Muktinath/Ranipauwa area depending on road conditions
  • Walking: Approximately 30 to 60 minutes around the temple area
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Accommodation: Three-Star Hotel in Pokhara
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This is the main pilgrimage day of the journey, so the morning begins early. Travel from Jomsom toward Kagbeni and continue up the mountain road to the Muktinath area. The surrounding landscape becomes increasingly dry and high-altitude, with broad views of the Mustang mountains and rocky Himalayan slopes.

After reaching Ranipauwa, continue on foot toward the Muktinath pilgrimage complex. Travellers who need assistance can use locally available transport support where operating and permitted.

At the temple complex, perform Muktinath Darshan and spend time visiting the principal sacred sites. These include the main Muktinath Temple, the famous 108 water spouts, the two sacred kundas and Jwala Mai Temple, where a naturally occurring flame is traditionally associated with the shrine. The complex also contains Buddhist religious elements, reflecting the importance of Muktinath to both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims.

After completing the pilgrimage, return to Jomsom and immediately continue the long Jeep journey toward Pokhara, retracing the Kali Gandaki corridor through Marpha, Ghasa, Tatopani and Beni. Arrive in Pokhara by evening, depending on road and weather conditions.

Day 5

Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu

  • Altitude: Pokhara 822 m | Kathmandu 1,350 m
  • Drive Distance: Approximately 200 to 210 km
  • Drive Duration: Around 6 to 8 hours depending on traffic and road conditions
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Accommodation: Three-Star Hotel in Kathmandu

After breakfast, begin the return journey from Pokhara to Kathmandu. The route once again follows the middle hills and river valleys, offering another perspective on the countryside travelled earlier in the trip.

As the road leaves Pokhara, the Himalayan landscape gradually gives way to rolling hills, terraced farmland, forests and increasingly busy settlements. Depending on the road conditions, a suitable stop can be made for lunch or refreshments along the way.

Arrive in Kathmandu later in the afternoon or evening and check into your hotel. After several days of mountain-road travel, the evening is intentionally kept relaxed. You can explore Thamel, head to Kathmandu Durbar Square, shop for souvenirs, enjoy a final Nepali meal or simply rest before departure the following day.

Day 6

Final Departure from Kathmandu

  • Meal: Breakfast

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and spend your remaining time according to your international flight schedule. You can use the morning for a final walk through Kathmandu or last-minute shopping if your departure time allows.

At the appropriate time, a Nepal Royal Tourism Holiday representative will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey.

Your six-day Muktinath Darshan by Jeep concludes after travelling from Kathmandu through Pokhara and the Kali Gandaki Valley, reaching the sacred pilgrimage complex of Muktinath, completing Darshan at the temple, and returning through the Himalayas to Kathmandu.

Frequently Asked Questions

This six-day journey is designed primarily for travellers and pilgrims who want to visit Muktinath Temple by road without undertaking the longer trekking routes through the Annapurna and Mustang regions. The journey combines pilgrimage with a scenic drive through the Kali Gandaki Valley.

The highest destination is Muktinath at approximately 3,800 metres. Because the journey climbs from Pokhara through the Kali Gandaki Valley relatively quickly, travellers should be prepared for the cooler temperatures and thinner air at the destination.

Yes, provided they are medically fit for the journey. The major advantage of travelling by Jeep is that travellers do not need to complete several days of mountain trekking. However, the altitude at Muktinath and the long hours on mountain roads should still be considered.

Muktinath is an important pilgrimage site revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. The pilgrimage complex contains the main temple, the famous 108 water spouts, two sacred water pools, Jwala Mai Temple and nearby Buddhist religious structures.

The 108 Mukti Dhara are traditional water spouts located behind the temple. Hindu pilgrims commonly pass beneath the flowing water as part of their religious purification ritual. The water is extremely cold because of the high-altitude environment.

Pilgrims who wish to perform the traditional ritual can do so, subject to their health, weather conditions and personal preference. Because the water is very cold and Muktinath is at high altitude, elderly or medically vulnerable travellers should take particular care.

Kagbeni is one of the historic settlements of the Mustang region and sits near the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Jhong rivers. Its old stone-and-mud houses, narrow passages and Tibetan-influenced Buddhist character make it an interesting cultural stop on the journey toward Muktinath.

The road becomes considerably more rugged after entering the Kali Gandaki Valley. Conditions can vary with weather, monsoon rainfall, landslides and road maintenance, so travel times should always be treated as approximate.

The exact duration varies according to road conditions and the route being used, but travellers should normally expect a full day of mountain-road travel, with stops along the way. It is better to allow extra time rather than depend on a strict arrival hour.

The primary purpose of this package is the Muktinath pilgrimage and overland journey. Pokhara is mainly used as the gateway between Kathmandu and Mustang, although sightseeing or additional activities can be added according to the final package arrangement.

The Jeep journey allows travellers to experience the Kali Gandaki Valley, Tatopani, Ghasa, Marpha, Jomsom and Kagbeni as part of the trip rather than simply arriving in Jomsom by air. It also provides a more road-based pilgrimage experience for those who specifically want to travel overland. However, flights can be arranged according to preference, but is subject to extra charges.

Yes. Road conditions, weather, local transportation and individual requirements may require adjustments. Additional nights in Pokhara or Kathmandu can also be arranged when needed.
