The Helambu Circuit Trek is by far the most scenic short trekking route in Nepal. Situated north of Kathmandu in the Langtang National Park, this trek reveals some of the best Himalayan scenery, mountain culture, and peaceful landscapes in a short time. Traversing the path, one will be spoiled by natural beauties such as forests, terraces, sources of water, mountains, and amazing migratory ways of animals.

Forming among those are the locals of Hyolmo and Sherpas, who live their daily routines in the villages along with climbers and travelers.
Besides the happy times of the family planting and harvesting farm products, the trekker will have mesmerized eyes of snow-covered mountains like Langtang Lirung and Dorje Lakpa. Going further to the area, he will find and meditate in old temples and visit the peaceful mountain settlements of Tarkeghyang and Melamchi Gaon.
In sharp contrast with heavily crowded trekking routes, the Helambu Circuit Trek provides the enjoyer a calm and non-commercialized trekking experience. Given its low altitude, excellent trails, and relatively short days, it is a good pick for beginners, families, and those seeking a less stressful Himalayan adventure.
For these reasons, the Helambu Circuit Trek is a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors near Kathmandu, has access to a few extremely rare local cultures, and offers spectacular mountain ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌views.

Safety‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ and Travel Tips for the Helambu Circuit Trek

  • Choose the Best Trekking Season The ideal time to go on a trek in the Helambu region is either in spring (March–May) or autumn (September–November), when you can enjoy the beautiful mountain views and the weather is stable in Langtang National Park.
  • Acclimatize and Trek Slowly: Though the Helambu Circuit Trek is not a very difficult one, it is still good for trekkers to go at a pace that feels comfortable for them and make sure to drink plenty of water in order to avoid problems related to altitude.
  • Hire an Experienced Guide Besides improving your safety, a professional guide will also help you navigate the trails and get to know the culture better while you are visiting villages around Kathmandu and the Helambu region.
  • Carry Essential Trekking Gear Getting the right trekking boots is important, and other things you should bring include warm clothes, something to protect against rain, sunscreen, and a basic first-aid kit to ensure a safe & pleasant trekking experience.
  • Stay Updated on Weather Conditions The weather in the mountains can be very unpredictable, so make sure to keep up with the weather forecast before you set out on your trek.
  • Drink Safe Water To avoid stomach upsets, do not drink untreated water. It is best to carry water purification tablets or a water filter with you.
  • Respect Local Culture and Nature When visiting monasteries and villages, be sure to be respectful and also help in keeping the trails clean by not littering and by following responsible trekking ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌practices.

Actually, from Chispani you have amazing views of the mountains, including Jugal Himal, Ganesh Himal, Himal Chuli, Gauri Shanker, Rolwaling, Dorje Lakpa, and several peaks from the Langtang Himalas and Gauri Shanker Himalas ranges. Also, you will be able to see the valleys and the sunrise, which is an additional benefit.

  • Altitude: 2,470 m
  • Trek Distance: 12 Km
  • Trek Duration: 5-6 Hrs

Walking through a village with beautifully traditional houses and thickly misty hills, you are finally at the end of your day in Kutumsang. • Altitude: 2,600 m
  • Trek Distance: 22 Km
  • Trek Duration: 6-7 Hrs
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tea House

First, you will be making a descent from Melamchi Gaun to Melamchi Khola. After that, you are going to reach Tarkeghyang by walking through a series of Buddhist villages, namely Nakote, Dozum, and Chiri. The place, which is named after the monastery located here, is also the oldest in the Helambu region. These villages are characterized by a large concentration of houses very close to each other. They present the picture of Western Nepali villages.

After Tarkeghyang, as the Helambu Circuit Trek Route turns towards the southwest direction, you will be gradually moving over forested routes with undulating slopes. Passing through Setighyang, you will also come across some small streams, fields, and quaint little villages. After more trekking, you will finally be in Ghangyul. Sermathang is a beautiful village that you will finally reach after 4 to 5 hours of trekking. Sermanthang has three big gompas. Jugal Himal, Dorje Lakpa, and Gaurishankar are all visible from Sermanthang, and these views are really ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌stunning.

You may, after passing a couple of bridges, enter Melamchi Pul Bazaar, which is a Sherpa settlement. There are also several small villages that feature chortens and mani walls along the way. It will take you 5 to 6 hours to walk from Sermanthang to Melamchi Pul. In case there is a need, this place may be your accommodation zone since there are guesthouses available on site. From here, you will be connecting to your mode of transportation because Melamchi Pul Bazaar has a road connection.

After one hour on the highway, you will reach Dhulikhel, a Newar settlement on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley. Besides Banepa and Bhaktapur, on the way to Kathmandu from Dhulikhel, there are also several other towns. After your return to Kathmandu, you may spend some time checking into your accommodation and getting a bit fresher. Later, you will go out for shopping and exploring Kathmandu. Accommodation is mainly local tea houses and lodges run by local families in villages like Tarkeghyang and Melamchi Gaon. Rooms are basic but comfortable, usually with twin beds and shared bathrooms.

Tea houses offer a variety of meals including traditional Nepali Dal Bhat, noodles, fried rice, soups, pancakes, and Tibetan dishes like Momo and Thukpa.
