tilicho lake trek in nepal

Tilicho Lake sits at 4,919 metres in the Annapurna Conservation Area and is one of the highest lakes in the world. That fact alone is enough to bring people here.

But the altitude number does not fully explain why the journey is worth twelve days of serious effort.

The real reason is the route itself.

tilicho lake trek

It moves through four or five completely different environments before the lake appears, and by the time you reach the water’s edge, the experience carries a weight that only combines distance and altitude can give it.

The trip opens in Kathmandu. You do not trek here, you arrive, eat, sleep, and listen to your guide run through the plan.

The city is dense and interesting if you give it a few hours, and the evening briefing tends to make everything feel real in a way the flight over did not.

tilicho lake

The following morning the jeep heads west along the Prithvi Highway and then north into the Marsyangdi river valley, with Besisahar as the first significant stop before the road climbs toward Chame.

The Marsyangdi gorge in its lower sections is worth paying attention to from the vehicle window. The canyon narrows in places so tightly that the walls feel a few metres away on either side.

The river runs loud and green far below. The villages on the valley floor look almost incidental against the scale of the stone above them.

Jagat and Dharapani come and go. Bagarchhap is where the environment changes, the stone and timber of the Hindu middle hills gives way to the flat roofed, white walled construction of Tibetan influenced building.

That shift happens quietly but it is clear once you notice it, and it signals what the upper valley is going to feel like.

Chame at 2,610 metres is where the jeep stops and the walking starts. The valley is wider here, the peaks more visible, and the air noticeably cooler.

Apple orchards line the trail out of town. The first full trekking day heads toward Upper Pisang, and the reason you go to Upper Pisang rather than Lower is simple.

From the ridge above the village at 3,300 meters, Annapurna II at 7,937 meters fills the southeastern sky at a scale that no photograph has communicated accurately.

The mountain is enormous from that angle. Most people stop walking for a moment when they first see it.

Between Upper Pisang and Manang there is a choice. The lower valley road is faster. The high trail via Ghyaru and Ngawal takes an extra hour and is significantly better.

It runs along the ridge with the Annapurna range spread across the opposite wall the entire way.

Ghyaru in particular, a small Tibetan village perched on the ridgeline, has a viewpoint that most trekkers name as one of the best open mountain views of the whole journey.

The lower road will still get you to Manang. But the ridge route is the one worth taking.

manang valley trek

Manang at 3,540 metres is the largest village in the upper valley and the place where the trek properly reveals itself.

The Gangapurna Glacier sits at the head of the valley directly above the rooftops, and the glacial lake at the base of the ice face is visible from every teahouse terrace.

You can eat lunch and watch the glacier from your seat. It is an unusual thing, a river of ice at the edge of a functioning village, and the closeness of it does not quite become ordinary however long you sit there.

eating in nepal trek

The acclimatization day in Manang is not optional and should not be spent lying down.

The principle is to climb higher during the day and return to sleep lower.

The standard hike is to the Ice Lake at around 4,600 metres above Manang, steep enough to feel like real work at this altitude, and the views from the top back down the valley with the Annapurna range on the opposite wall are among the best on the whole route.

Come back to Manang, eat well, and go to sleep early. That is the correct way to use this day.

From Manang the route leaves the main Annapurna Circuit and heads west toward Khangsar at 3,734 metres, a stone settlement on a drier and more exposed slope above the valley.

Past Khangsar the terrain changes completely. The trail crosses a steep scree section above a river gorge, with loose rock and some exposure that demands careful footing and real attention.

tilicho trek view

This section is more physically engaging than anything on the lower approach, and the trail description on paper does not fully prepare you for it.

Above the scree the path stabilizes and arrives at Shree Kharka at 4,060 metres, the first night above four thousand metres and the point at which the high mountain environment stops being the backdrop and becomes the whole story.

Tilicho Base Camp the next day sits at 4,150 metres on a rocky plateau with the first direct sightline toward Tilicho Peak above the lake basin.

tilicho lake nepal royal tourism holidays

The section between Shree Kharka and base camp is shorter in distance but crosses more demanding ground, with dry landslide slopes and narrow paths that require the same steady attention as the day before.

Most trekkers photograph the view of Tilicho Peak from base camp in the late afternoon light more than once and fail to capture it properly, which means the light is doing something that cameras struggle with.

The lake is two to three hours above base camp on a steep trail across moraine and snow.

tilicho lake trek

It appears gradually as you top the final rise, first a hint of color between the ridgelines, then the full basin at once.

At 4,919 metres the air is thin enough that the last thirty minutes feel noticeably harder than the distance suggests.

The water is a blue-green that does not look quite real against the surrounding snow and stone. Tilicho Peak at 7,134 metres and Khangsar Kang at 7,485 metres define the walls above.

tilicho lake nepal

On a clear morning the reflection on the surface is as striking as the peaks themselves. Most trekkers spend longer here than they planned to.

The return descends through base camp to Shree Kharka, then continues the next day back through Khangsar to Manang.

The altitude drops fast, and the air becomes warmer within the first hour of walking. Back in Manang a second time, the familiar village and the glacier above it carry a different quality than they did on the way up.

manang valley

The jeep takes over from there for the long road back down the Marsyangdi Valley through Besisahar and on to Kathmandu.

The trek is rated moderate to challenging, and walking days run four to seven hours.

The difficulty is defined on the scree traverse near Khangsar, the approach to base camp, and the final lake ascent.

tilicho lake image

The altitude at 4,919 metres is higher than Annapurna Base Camp, and the acclimatization day in Manang exists specifically because of that number.

Trekkers who prepare seriously and take that day properly will find the upper section hard but manageable.

Spring and autumn are both strong. Autumn, from September through November gives the clearest skies and the most stable high altitude weather.

tilicho lake religioussite

October is the peak month for good reason. Spring brings warmer lower valley temperatures and softer snow on the lake approach.

Winter is possible, but the scree section and the lake ascent carry real ice risk in cold conditions. Monsoon is generally not recommended on this route.

tilicho lake trek

If you are planning to go there, the Tilicho Lake Trek works as a complete experience rather than just an approach to a single destination.

The lake earns its place at the end because the route earns the right to put it there.

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu

  • Altitude: 1350 m
  • Accommodation: Standard Three Star Hotel in Thamel

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, our representative will receive you and transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu. After check-in, you can rest from your journey or explore the nearby streets of Thamel, the main tourist hub of the city. In the evening, there will be a short trek briefing with your guide. The guide will explain the route, altitude profile, packing requirements, safety precautions, and daily walking schedule. This is also the best time to check your trekking gear and buy or rent anything missing before heading to the mountains.

Day 2

Drive from Kathmandu to Chame

  • Altitude: 2610 m
  • Travel Duration: 9 to 10 hours
  • Travel Distance:  230 km
  • Meal: Breakfast and Lunch
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Chame

After breakfast, we begin a long scenic drive from Kathmandu toward the Annapurna region. The road follows river valleys, terraced fields, small towns, and hillside villages before entering the Marsyangdi Valley. Depending on road conditions, the journey passes through Besisahar, Dharapani, and finally reaches Chame, the district headquarters of Manang. The drive is long but very scenic, offering the first glimpse of the mountain environment. Chame is a beautiful village surrounded by pine forests and mountain views, and it marks the proper beginning of your high Himalayan journey.

Day 3

Trek from Chame to Upper Pisang

  • Altitude: 3300 m
  • Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hours
  • Trek Distance: 14 to 15 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Upper Pisang

Today is the first trekking day. The trail follows the Marsyangdi River and gradually climbs through pine forests, apple farms, small villages, and dramatic mountain landscapes. You will pass places such as Bhratang and Dhukur Pokhari before reaching Pisang. As you move higher, the scenery becomes drier and more alpine. Upper Pisang is located above the main trail and provides excellent views of Annapurna II, Pisang Peak, and the surrounding valley. Since the altitude is already above 3,000 meters, we keep a steady walking pace and avoid rushing.

Day 4

Trek from Upper Pisang to Manang

  • Altitude: 3540 m
  • Trek Duration: 6 to 7 hours
  • Trek Distance: 16 to 17 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Manang

The trail from Upper Pisang to Manang is one of the most beautiful sections of the trek. If weather and fitness allow, we can follow the higher scenic route through Ghyaru and Ngawal, which offers wide views of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, and Chulu range. The trail is longer and more demanding, but it provides excellent mountain scenery and also helps with gradual altitude exposure. By the time we reach Manang, the landscape becomes wide, dry, and culturally rich, with Tibetan-style houses, monasteries, chortens, and prayer flags. Manang is a large and culturally rich village, perfect for rest and acclimatization.

Day 5

Acclimatization Day in Manang

  • Altitude: 3540 m
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Manang

Today is set aside for acclimatization. This rest day is very important because the trek will soon go above 4,000 meters. Instead of sleeping all day, we follow the rule of climb high and sleep low. You can take a short hike to Gangapurna Lake, Bhojo Gompa, or a nearby viewpoint above Manang. These hikes help your body adjust to the altitude while also giving excellent views of Gangapurna Glacier, Annapurna III, and the Manang Valley. The rest of the day can be spent exploring the village, visiting bakeries, checking gear, and preparing for the higher section toward Tilicho Lake.

Day 6

Trek from Manang to Shree Kharka via Khangsar

  • Altitude: 4060 m
  • Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hours
  • Trek Distance: 10 to 12 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Shree Kharka

After breakfast, we leave the main Annapurna Circuit trail and head toward Tilicho Lake. The route first descends slightly, crosses a river, and gradually climbs toward Khangsar village. Khangsar is an old mountain settlement with stone houses, prayer flags, and a quiet traditional atmosphere. From here, the trail continues toward Shree Kharka, passing dry hillsides and open alpine terrain. The mountain views become more dramatic as the valley narrows. Since we are now above 4,000 meters, the walking pace should be slow and steady. Shree Kharka is a good overnight stop before moving to Tilicho Base Camp.

Day 7

Trek from Shree Kharka to Tilicho Base Camp

  • Altitude: 4150 m
  • Trek Duration: 7 to 9 km
  • Trek Distance: 4 to 5 hours
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Tilicho Base Camp

Today’s trek is shorter in distance but more demanding due to rough trail conditions. The path to Tilicho Base Camp crosses dry landslide areas and narrow sections where careful footing is required. Your guide will lead the way and advise where to walk safely. The scenery is wild and remote, with towering cliffs and Himalayan peaks surrounding the route. After several hours of gradual walking, we reach Tilicho Base Camp. The accommodation here is basic because of the altitude and remote location, but the atmosphere is truly adventurous. After lunch, it is best to rest early because the next day starts before sunrise.

Day 8

Hike to Tilicho Lake and Return to Shree Kharka

  • Altitude: 4919 m
  • Trek Duration: 7 to 9 hours
  • Trek Distance: 14 to 16 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Shree Kharka

This is the most important and rewarding day of the trek. We start early in the morning and climb gradually from Tilicho Base Camp toward Tilicho Lake. The trail is steep in sections and the high altitude makes the walk physically demanding, so we move slowly with enough rest stops. As we approach the lake, the landscape becomes more glacial and dramatic. Finally, Tilicho Lake appears below the surrounding snow-covered peaks, creating an unforgettable Himalayan view. After spending time at the lake for photos, rest, and enjoyment, we descend carefully back to Tilicho Base Camp and continue down to Shree Kharka for the night. Sleeping lower helps with recovery after the high-altitude day.

Day 9

Trek from Shree Kharka to Manang

  • Altitude: 3540 m
  • Trek Duration: 4 to 5 hours
  • Trek Distance: 10 to 12 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Manang

After the successful hike to Tilicho Lake, today’s route descends back toward Manang. The walk feels easier as we lose altitude and return to more comfortable oxygen levels. We retrace the trail through Khangsar and continue across the valley toward Manang. Along the way, you can enjoy final views of the Tilicho side valley and the surrounding peaks. Once back in Manang, there is time to rest, enjoy a warm meal, and celebrate the completion of the main trekking objective. This is also a good day to relax, take a hot shower if available, and recover from the previous long day.

Day 10

Drive from Manang to Besisahar

  • Altitude: 760 m
  • Travel Duration: 6 to 7 hours
  • Travel Distance: 98 km
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Besisahar

Today we leave the high mountains and take a local jeep down through the Marsyangdi Valley. Depending on road conditions, the drive may begin from Manang or Chame. The journey follows rough mountain roads, passing villages, waterfalls, pine forests, and river valleys that you walked through earlier in the trek. As the vehicle descends, the air becomes warmer and the landscape turns greener again. The drive can be bumpy, but it saves several trekking days and makes the 12-day itinerary practical. Overnight will be in Besisahar or a nearby town, depending on timing and road conditions.

Day 11

Drive from Besisahar to Kathmandu

  • Altitude: 1350 m
  • Travel Duration: 7 to 8 hours
  • Travel Distance: 175 km
  • Meal: Breakfast and Lunch
  • Accommodation: Standard Three Star Hotel in Thamel

After breakfast, we drive back to Kathmandu through river valleys, highway towns, and terraced hillsides. The journey offers time to reflect on the trek and enjoy the changing scenery from mountain roads back to the city. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for rest, shopping, laundry, or exploring Thamel. In the evening, you can enjoy celebrate the successful completion of the Tilicho Lake Trek and grab certificate from us.

Day 12

  • Meal: Breakfast

Your Tilicho Lake Trek ends today. Depending on your flight schedule, our representative will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your final departure. If you have extra time in Nepal, you can extend your trip with Kathmandu sightseeing, Pokhara relaxation, Chitwan Jungle Safari, or another short trek.

Route Map for Tilicho Lake Trek – 12 days

Frequently Asked Questions

The Tilicho Lake Trek is considered a strenuous high-altitude trek in the Annapurna region. The route does not require technical climbing skills or mountaineering equipment, but trekkers should be prepared for long walking days, steep uphill sections, rough trails, and high altitude. The most demanding part of the journey is the hike to Tilicho Lake at 4,919 meters. Good fitness, proper trekking gear, and a slow walking pace are important for completing the trek comfortably.

Yes, this 12-day Tilicho Lake Trek includes an important acclimatization day in Manang at 3,540 meters. This rest day helps your body adjust before moving higher toward Shree Kharka, Tilicho Base Camp, and Tilicho Lake. During the acclimatization day, trekkers can take short hikes around Manang, visit Gangapurna Lake, explore local monasteries, or simply rest. This extra day makes the itinerary safer and more comfortable compared to a faster version without acclimatization.

The highest point of the trek is Tilicho Lake at 4,919 meters. Trekkers visit the lake as a day hike from Tilicho Base Camp and then descend to a lower altitude for overnight stay. This is important because sleeping lower after reaching a high point helps the body recover better. The highest overnight stop is usually Tilicho Base Camp or Shree Kharka, depending on the day’s plan and lodge availability.

Fit beginners can complete the Tilicho Lake Trek with proper preparation, but it is not an easy beginner trek. The trail reaches almost 5,000 meters, and some days require 6 to 8 hours of walking. Beginners should do some physical training before the trek, including uphill walking, cardio exercise, and day hikes with a backpack. Having an acclimatization day in Manang makes this itinerary more suitable for first-time high-altitude trekkers than the shorter version.

The best seasons for the Tilicho Lake Trek are spring from March to May and autumn from September to November. Spring offers warmer weather, blooming rhododendrons in the lower region, and beautiful mountain views. Autumn is the most popular season because the skies are usually clearer and the weather is more stable. Winter can be very cold with possible snow near Tilicho Base Camp, while monsoon season may bring rain, slippery trails, and landslide risk.

Most trekking days on the Tilicho Lake Trek involve around 5 to 7 hours of walking. Some days are shorter, such as the trek from Shree Kharka to Tilicho Base Camp, but the altitude and rough trail can still make it feel demanding. The longest day is usually the hike to Tilicho Lake and return, which can take around 7 to 9 hours depending on your pace, weather conditions, trail condition, and time spent at the lake.

The trail to Tilicho Lake is not technical, but some sections between Shree Kharka and Tilicho Base Camp pass through narrow and landslide-prone areas. Trekkers must walk carefully, especially in snow, rain, ice, or loose gravel. An experienced guide is strongly recommended because the trail conditions can change depending on weather. With proper boots, trekking poles, slow walking, and guidance, the route is manageable for fit trekkers.

Trekkers need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) for the Tilicho Lake Trek, as the route goes through the Annapurna Conservation Area. TIMS/E-TIMS rules can change or vary in practice, so Nepal Royal Tourism Holidays will check the latest requirements and arrange the necessary trekking documents before the trip begins.

Accommodation during the Tilicho Lake Trek is mainly in local teahouses and mountain lodges. Rooms are usually simple twin-sharing rooms with basic beds, mattresses, pillows, and blankets. In lower villages, facilities are more comfortable, but as you go higher, especially around Shree Kharka and Tilicho Base Camp, services become more basic. Hot showers, Wi-Fi, and charging may be available in some places but often cost extra.

Teahouses along the trail usually serve simple but filling meals such as dal bhat, noodles, fried rice, pasta, soup, potatoes, eggs, pancakes, porridge, tea, and coffee. Dal bhat is a popular choice because it provides good energy for long trekking days. Food options become more limited at higher altitude, so it is useful to carry some personal snacks like energy bars, nuts, chocolate, or electrolyte powder.

Yes, the Tilicho Lake Trek itinerary can be customized based on your time, fitness level, travel style, and interest. You can add extra rest days, include Pokhara, extend the trek toward Thorong La Pass, Muktinath, Jomsom, or combine it with the Annapurna Circuit. If you prefer a safer and more relaxed experience, adding extra acclimatization or buffer days is always a good idea, especially for high-altitude trekking.
