Nepal is a country where a short journey can reveal an extraordinary range of history, religion, architecture and mountain scenery.

The five-day Glimpse of Nepal Tour is designed for travellers who want to experience that variety without undertaking a long trek or moving constantly between distant regions.

Based primarily around Kathmandu Valley, the tour combines historic cities, sacred Hindu and Buddhist landmarks, a peaceful hill station and the traditional culture that has shaped Nepal for centuries.

Kathmandu provides the natural starting point because so much of Nepal’s cultural identity is concentrated within and around the valley.

The city can feel busy and modern at first, but its older neighbourhoods tell a very different story.

Temple courtyards, stone images, carved wooden windows, prayer wheels, monasteries and traditional markets continue to exist alongside restaurants, shops and everyday city life.

The result is a destination where historic and contemporary Nepal are visible within the same streets.

The journey also takes you away from the centre of Kathmandu to Nagarkot, where the atmosphere changes from urban activity to quiet hill scenery.

Located on the eastern edge of the Kathmandu Valley, Nagarkot is known for its elevated position and Himalayan sunrise and sunset views.

Early mornings are particularly rewarding when the weather is clear, as layers of hills open toward the distant snow-covered peaks.

The experience is less about a strenuous mountain excursion and more about seeing the Himalayan landscape from a peaceful viewpoint without leaving the comfort of the valley region.

One of the most memorable cultural experiences follows in Bhaktapur, whose historic centre provides a remarkable look at Newari urban heritage.

Bhaktapur developed as an important royal city and still preserves many of the architectural traditions associated with the Kathmandu Valley’s medieval period.

Walking through Bhaktapur Durbar Square brings you past pagoda temples, palace buildings, carved wooden façades and courtyards where traditional craftsmanship remains visible.

The city is also famous for its local foods and pottery traditions, giving visitors an experience that goes beyond simply photographing monuments.

The tour continues through the spiritual side of Nepal with visits to Pashupatinath, Boudhanath and Swayambhunath.

These three places represent different but closely connected expressions of the valley’s religious heritage.

Pashupatinath is one of the country’s most important Hindu pilgrimage sites, while Boudhanath is a major centre of Tibetan Buddhist culture.

Swayambhunath combines a hilltop setting, a historic Buddhist stupa and a wider complex of religious shrines and monasteries overlooking the valley.

The inclusion of these sites gives visitors a better understanding of why religion remains so visible in everyday Nepal.

Bells, incense, prayer flags, devotional music, spinning prayer wheels and pilgrims are not simply part of a tourist display; they are features of living religious traditions. T

The Kathmandu Valley’s cultural heritage is therefore best experienced by spending time in these places and observing how people interact with them rather than simply moving from one landmark to another.

The five-day journey also includes the older settlements of Kirtipur and Chobhar, which provide a quieter perspective on the valley.

Kirtipur retains much of its historic hill-settlement character, while Chobhar is known for its gorge and religious landmarks.

Together, they help show that Kathmandu Valley’s heritage extends beyond the most famous UNESCO-listed squares and temples.

Despite being a compact tour, the itinerary has been designed around contrasts.

The busy streets of Kathmandu give way to Nagarkot’s hilltop quiet, the open mountain horizon gives way to the tightly built historic streets of Bhaktapur, and the architectural heritage of the valley leads naturally into the religious atmosphere of its great Buddhist and Hindu pilgrimage sites.

The tour is also deliberately easy in terms of physical demand. There is no extended hiking, no high-altitude expedition and no requirement for specialist equipment.

Visitors will walk through historic squares, temple complexes and hilltop viewpoints, but the majority of the journey takes place by comfortable road transport.

This makes the itinerary suitable for first-time visitors, families, couples and travellers who want to experience Nepal without a strenuous trekking commitment. Five days cannot cover the whole of Nepal, and this tour does not attempt to.

Instead, it concentrates on the Kathmandu Valley and nearby hills, where an unusually rich combination of history, spirituality, architecture, local culture and Himalayan scenery can be experienced without long internal travel.

That makes the Glimpse of Nepal Tour a practical introduction for travellers who want to understand the country before returning for a longer adventure.

By the end of the journey, visitors will have seen far more than a collection of famous attractions.

They will have experienced the rhythm of Kathmandu, the artistic legacy of Bhaktapur, amd the peaceful mountain atmosphere of Nagarkot.

Moeover, the spiritual significance of Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath and Boudhanath, and the quieter historic character of Kirtipur and Chobhar.

Together, these experiences provide a genuine glimpse of the cultural and scenic diversity that makes Nepal such a distinctive destination.

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu

  • Altitude: 1,350 m
  • Accommodation: Standard Three-Star Hotel in Thamel

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative from Nepal Royal Treks will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu. After checking in and taking some time to settle down, you can explore the nearby streets of Thamel, where traditional handicraft shops, restaurants, cafés, trekking stores, and small local businesses create a lively first impression of Kathmandu.

The rest of the day is intentionally relaxed after your international journey. In the evening, your tour representative will meet you for a short briefing about the sightseeing program, transportation arrangements, local customs, and the places you will visit over the next few days. It is also a good opportunity to sample your first Nepalese meal and prepare for an early start on the following morning.

Day 2

Kathmandu Heritage, Pashupatinath and Boudhanath, Drive to Nagarkot

  • Altitude: Kathmandu 1,350 m | Nagarkot 2,175 m
  • Sightseeing Duration: Approximately 6 to 7 hours
  • Drive Duration: Approximately 2 to 3 hours including sightseeing transfers
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Accommodation: Three-Star Hotel or Similar in Nagarkot

After breakfast, begin the cultural part of the journey at Pashupatinath Temple, one of Nepal’s most important Hindu pilgrimage sites on the banks of the Bagmati River. The temple complex is not simply a monument to photograph; it remains an active religious centre, with shrines, courtyards, pilgrims, sadhus, and riverside ghats forming part of everyday life. Pashupatinath is one of the major pilgrimage sites and UNESCO World Heritage monuments of Kathmandu Valley.

Continue to Boudhanath Stupa, where the atmosphere changes from Hindu pilgrimage to Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The enormous white dome is surrounded by monasteries, shops and rooftop cafés, while pilgrims and local residents walk clockwise around the stupa turning prayer wheels. It is one of the most important Buddhist centres in the valley and provides a very different cultural experience from Pashupatinath.

After lunch, leave the central Kathmandu area and drive toward Nagarkot. The city gradually gives way to terraced hillsides, small settlements and quieter rural surroundings as the road climbs toward the eastern rim of the valley. At approximately 2,175 metres, Nagarkot feels noticeably cooler and more peaceful than Kathmandu and is particularly known for its sunrise and sunset views. On clear days, the Himalayan panorama can extend across several major peaks, although visibility naturally depends on weather conditions.

Spend the evening at Nagarkot rather than rushing back to Kathmandu. After sunset, the hill station becomes quiet, giving you a chance to enjoy dinner and the surrounding countryside before an early night for the following morning’s sunrise.

Day 3

Nagarkot Sunrise, Changu Narayan and Bhaktapur

  • Altitude: Nagarkot 2,175 m | Bhaktapur 1,400 m | Kathmandu 1,350 m
  • Sightseeing Duration: Approximately 7–8 hours
  • Drive Duration: Approximately 2–3 hours including transfers
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Accommodation: Standard Three-Star Hotel in Kathmandu

You begin your tour before sunrise at Nagarkot. From the viewpoint, watch the first light spread across the surrounding hills and gradually illuminate the distant Himalayan skyline. The experience is particularly atmospheric in the early morning, when the hill station is quiet and the layers of valleys below are often still covered in mist. Nagarkot is best for sunrise, sunset, Himalayan scenery and short excursions toward Changu Narayan.

After breakfast, continue toward Changu Narayan, one of the oldest temples in the Kathmandu Valley and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple sits on a hilltop overlooking the surrounding countryside, and the approach provides a much quieter experience than the major urban sightseeing sites. Its stone and wood sculptures, inscriptions, and religious importance make it an excellent link between the rural hill environment and the historic cities of the valley.  Changu Narayan is among the valley’s major World Heritage monuments.

From Changu Narayan, continue to Bhaktapur, where the character of the day changes again. Entering the historic city means leaving the open hill landscape behind and stepping into a dense medieval urban environment shaped by Newari art and craftsmanship. Explore Bhaktapur Durbar Square, including Nyatapola Temple, the Golden Gate, the Palace of 55 Windows and the surrounding courtyards and streets. Allow time to notice the smaller details as well, such as carved windows, brick façades, traditional workshops and local food rather than simply moving from monument to monument.

After the sightseeing program, return to Kathmandu and check into your hotel. The evening is free for dinner, shopping or a relaxed walk through Thamel.

Day 4

Kirtipur, Chobhar and Swayambhunath Cultural Experience

  • Altitude: Kathmandu 1,350 m | Kirtipur approximately 1,400 m
  • Sightseeing Duration: Approximately 6–7 hours
  • Drive Duration: Approximately 2–3 hours including transfers
  • Meal: Breakfast
  • Accommodation: Standard Three-Star Hotel in Kathmandu

Today’s program explores a quieter side of the Kathmandu Valley. Begin with Kirtipur, an old hilltop settlement whose traditional streets, temples, courtyards and Newari architecture provide a different experience from the larger tourist centres. Rather than focusing only on major monuments, the visit gives you time to observe the old urban layout and everyday life that continues within the historic settlement.

Continue to Chobhar, where the landscape opens around the Chobhar Gorge and the surrounding hills. The area is associated with the geography and traditional legends of Kathmandu Valley and provides a welcome change from the dense city centre. The surrounding hills and river landscape also make the area interesting for travellers who want to see how the valley changes beyond the main heritage squares.

In the afternoon, continue to Swayambhunath, one of Kathmandu’s most recognisable Buddhist monuments. The stupa stands on a hill west of the city and is surrounded by shrines, monasteries, prayer wheels and smaller religious structures. The climb through the complex is part of the experience, and reaching the main stupa gives you a broad view across Kathmandu. Swayambhunath is one of the valley’s most eminent Buddhist monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

End the day with a relaxed evening in Kathmandu. Depending on the group’s preference and timing, you can enjoy traditional Nepalese food or a farewell cultural dinner before returning to the hotel.

Day 5

Final Departure from Kathmandu

  • Meals: Breakfast

Enjoy your final breakfast in Kathmandu and use the remaining time according to your international flight schedule. There is no rushed sightseeing planned today, allowing you to pack comfortably, complete last-minute shopping, or take one final walk around the city. At the appropriate time, a Nepal Royal Tourism Holiday representative will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey.

Your five-day Glimpse of Nepal concludes after experiencing Kathmandu’s Hindu and Buddhist heritage, the hilltop scenery of Nagarkot, the historic temple of Changu Narayan, the medieval streets of Bhaktapur, the traditional character of Kirtipur and Chobhar, and the hilltop spirituality of Swayambhunath.

Frequently Asked Questions

The package focuses on Kathmandu Valley sightseeing, Nagarkot, Bhaktapur and other cultural and religious attractions included in the itinerary, together with hotel accommodation, breakfast, transportation and guide services according to the selected package

Yes. The itinerary does not contain strenuous trekking and is based mainly around sightseeing by vehicle with manageable walking at temples, historic squares and viewpoints. Similar five-day programs are commonly described as easy-paced tours suitable for a broad range of travellers.

Nagarkot, at approximately 2,175 metres, is the highest overnight destination in the itinerary. This is not a high-altitude trekking program and does not involve prolonged exposure to extreme mountain elevations.

Yes, Nagarkot is well known for Himalayan sunrise and sunset views, although visibility depends entirely on weather and atmospheric conditions. The viewpoint is therefore best described as offering Himalayan panoramas rather than guaranteeing a particular mountain on every visit.

Bhaktapur’s historic centre contains major Newari architectural landmarks including Nyatapola Temple, the Golden Gate, the Palace of 55 Windows and traditional urban courtyards. The city is also known for pottery, woodcarving and local food such as Juju Dhau.

Kirtipur is one of the historic settlements of Kathmandu Valley, while nearby Chobhar is known for its gorge, hilltop religious sites and the cultural legends associated with the formation of the Kathmandu Valley. The combination provides a quieter contrast to Kathmandu’s busiest tourist areas.

The standard package can use three-star or similar tourist-standard hotels, with a comfortable Nagarkot stay positioned for convenient access to the sunrise viewpoint

No. Comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen, a small daypack and personal medications are generally sufficient for the sightseeing itinerary

Yes. Similar five-day Nepal tour programs are commonly offered with customizable itineraries. Changes can be made according to flight schedules, accommodation preferences, sightseeing priorities and available time, provided the revised route remains practical.
