WiFi and Internet Access on Nepal Trekking Route: SIM Cards, Coverage & Connectivity Guide

One of the most common questions travellers ask before trekking in Nepal is surprisingly simple: “Will I have internet on the trek?” The answer is yes in many places, but not everywhere.

Nepal’s major trekking routes now have considerably better telecommunications infrastructure than they did in the past. In popular trekking villages, you can often connect your phone, send messages, check maps, make calls and use social media.

Some lodges also provide WiFi, while certain high-altitude routes have dedicated trekking internet services. But the experience changes dramatically once you leave the larger villages.

You may have excellent 4G in one settlement, weak mobile data on the trail, paid lodge WiFi at the next stop and absolutely no phone signal a few hours later. A mountain ridge, deep valley, weather conditions or simple distance from the nearest tower can make a huge difference.

That is why this guide looks at internet access route by route rather than simply saying that Nepal has good or bad connectivity.

The simple answer

Among Nepal’s major trekking routes, the Everest Base Camp corridor generally offers the strongest overall connectivity infrastructure, particularly around Lukla and Namche Bazaar and through the WiFi systems serving the Khumbu. Annapurna also has good connectivity along many developed sections, while more remote routes such as upper Manaslu, Dolpo, Dhaulagiri and parts of Kanchenjunga can become much more isolated.

Which Nepal Trek Has the Best Internet?

If staying connected is important to you, the trekking route you choose makes a big difference.

The Everest Base Camp Trek is generally the strongest choice for connectivity because the Khumbu receives an enormous amount of trekking traffic and has developed a combination of mobile networks, lodge WiFi and dedicated trekking internet services.

The Annapurna region is another strong choice, particularly on established routes and around larger villages. Nepal Telecom has also expanded 4G infrastructure into important areas of the Annapurna region, including Machhapuchhre Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp.

As the routes become more remote, internet access becomes less predictable. Manaslu, Dolpo, Kanchenjunga and remote sections of other long-distance treks can have long periods without usable mobile data or WiFi.

WiFi and Mobile Data Are Not the Same Thing

This is probably the most important thing to understand before you arrive. When somebody says, “There is WiFi at the teahouse,” that does not necessarily mean you will have fast internet all day.

Likewise, when a mobile tower is shown as covering an area, it does not mean that every point along the trail will have a strong 4G signal.

Mobile data comes directly through your SIM card and a nearby network tower. It may work perfectly while you are sitting in a village and disappear completely once the trail drops behind a mountain ridge.

WiFi is usually provided by the lodge or a dedicated trekking connectivity system. It can be useful when mobile signal is unavailable, but it is often shared among many guests and can become slower during busy periods.

On the Everest route in particular, dedicated WiFi services such as Everest Link provide an additional option when ordinary mobile data becomes unreliable. Mobile connectivity is usually easiest around lower Khumbu settlements such as Lukla and Namche, while trekkers rely more heavily on lodge WiFi and trekking WiFi as they move higher.

Think of trekking internet as layers

Layer 1: mobile data through NTC or Ncell.

Layer 2: lodge WiFi where available.

Layer 3: dedicated trekking internet such as Everest Link on supported routes.

Layer 4: offline maps and downloaded information when all connectivity disappears.

Layer 5: appropriate emergency communication equipment for genuinely remote journeys.

Everest Base Camp Trek Internet: What Actually Works?

If internet access matters to you, the Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the better choices in Nepal.

That does not mean you will have perfect internet every hour from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp. The experience changes as you climb higher. In Lukla and Namche Bazaar, mobile data and WiFi are comparatively easy to find.

Further toward Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche and Gorakshep, normal mobile coverage becomes less dependable and trekkers increasingly use lodge WiFi or Everest Link.

There is another important detail that is easy to miss when reading trekking websites. Not every teahouse has the same internet setup. One lodge may offer WiFi, another may sell an Everest Link connection, another may have a weak local connection and another may have no usable WiFi at all that day.

Even when a lodge advertises WiFi, the connection can slow down when a large group of trekkers returns from the trail and everyone connects at the same time. Weather, power availability and the condition of the local network can also affect the experience.

Everest Link WiFi is available across many major stops in the Everest region, and prepaid access is sold through numerous stores and lodges along the Everest Base Camp route.

What About WiFi at Everest Teahouses?

This is where expectations need to be realistic.

Many teahouses and lodges along the Everest route offer some form of internet access, but the service is not identical from one accommodation to another. Some properties may have their own WiFi connection, while others rely on a regional service such as Everest Link.

Some teahouses may include WiFi in the room or accommodation price. Others may charge separately. At higher elevations, paid access is more common and the cost can increase because providing internet in a remote mountain environment is expensive.

You should also expect differences in performance.

A connection that is perfectly good for WhatsApp, email or a short message may struggle with a video call. Uploading a large batch of photographs can take considerably longer than you expect. During busy evening hours, a connection shared by many trekkers can become noticeably slower.

Never assume “WiFi available” means “fast internet available”

On a trekking route, WiFi simply means that some form of internet connection exists at the property. It does not guarantee a strong signal, unlimited bandwidth, free access or uninterrupted service throughout your stay.

Annapurna Circuit Internet and WiFi

The Annapurna Circuit is another strong option for trekkers who want to remain reasonably connected while travelling through the Himalayas.

The route passes through many established villages, and mobile service and WiFi are available through much of the lower and middle sections. Connectivity becomes more variable as you approach the higher elevations and the remote areas around the Thorong La section.

As with Everest, the key is not to expect one continuous internet connection. The network can work well in one village and then become weak or disappear between settlements.

NTC and Ncell do not have identical coverage, so travellers who care about connectivity should not assume one SIM will work everywhere. For remote trekking, we generally prefer Nepal Telecom as the first SIM to carry, while Ncell can still be very useful in Kathmandu, Pokhara and places where its local coverage is stronger.

Annapurna Base Camp Internet: Better Than You Might Expect

Annapurna Base Camp has also benefited from improved telecommunications infrastructure.

Nepal Telecom has expanded 4G service into the Annapurna region, with network infrastructure reaching areas including Annapurna Base Camp. That still does not mean ABC has city-style internet.

On the way to Base Camp, connectivity generally becomes less predictable as the trail enters narrower valleys and climbs higher. Some teahouses offer WiFi, while others may not. A lodge may have a connection but only enough bandwidth for basic messaging when everybody is online.

This is especially important because travellers sometimes arrive at a high-altitude teahouse expecting to upload hundreds of photographs or hold a long video call. It is much better to do those tasks when you reach a stronger connection lower down.

Mardi Himal and Ghorepani Poon Hill Connectivity

For travellers who want a shorter trek but would prefer not to completely disappear from the internet, the shorter Annapurna-side routes can be practical choices.

Mardi Himal passes through a number of established lodges and villages, while Ghorepani and the surrounding trekking settlements have long catered to a large number of visitors. Mobile service is generally more useful here than on the most remote Himalayan circuits, although terrain can still create dead spots.

The main advantage of these shorter routes is not that every metre of the trail has signal. It is that you regularly return to villages where some combination of mobile data, WiFi and electricity is available.

That makes them much easier for travellers who need to check in with family, manage work messages or keep their phone connected without sacrificing the experience of trekking in the mountains.

Langtang Trek Internet and Mobile Network

The connectivity information below describes normal trekking conditions in the Langtang Valley. Following the August 2026 Bhotekoshi floods, the usual road and trail access around Syabrubesi and Rasuwa remains seriously disrupted. We currently recommend checking the latest access situation before making a Langtang trekking plan and postponing the trek until the normal route is operating safely again.

Langtang is much closer to Kathmandu than Everest Base Camp or the remote western trekking regions, but that does not mean the phone signal stays strong throughout the entire valley.

The lower settlements generally have better communication access than the deeper parts of the valley. Once you move away from the larger villages and into narrower sections surrounded by steep mountains, the signal can become weaker or disappear completely.

Some teahouses may offer WiFi, especially in established settlements, while others may not have a working connection. Even when WiFi is available, it may be slower than what you are used to at home, and it may be shared among many guests.

For ordinary travellers, Langtang is therefore a route where it is sensible to have mobile data as the main option and WiFi as a useful backup.

There is another reason to avoid depending completely on your phone. The Langtang landscape contains steep valleys and mountain walls that can block a signal even when a network tower is operating nearby.

A strong signal in one village does not guarantee coverage along the walking trail between that village and the next.

Langtang expectation

Expect connectivity to come and go. Download maps before leaving Kathmandu or a stronger network area, complete important calls when you have reliable service, and do not assume every teahouse will have usable WiFi.

Manaslu Circuit Internet: Better Than Before, But Still Remote

The Manaslu Circuit used to be one of the trekking routes where going offline for long periods was simply part of the experience. That situation is gradually changing.

Nepal Telecom expanded 2G and 4G service into parts of the Manaslu trekking area and around Larkya La (Larke Pass) in 2026, improving mobile communication in places that previously had much more limited connectivity.

That is excellent news for trekkers, but we would still describe Manaslu as a remote route with improving connectivity, not an always-online trek.

There can be mobile service around important villages, while other stretches between settlements remain quiet. WiFi may be available at some teahouses, but it should never be assumed to be present everywhere. Compared with the Everest corridor, lodge internet and mobile coverage on Manaslu are still much less consistent.

This means Manaslu is a good example of why travellers should separate “mobile coverage exists somewhere on the route” from “I will have internet every evening.”

Gokyo and Everest Three Passes Internet

The Everest region has an interesting advantage: once you move away from the standard Everest Base Camp corridor, connectivity does not automatically disappear.

Everest Link hotspots are available at Dole, Phortse, Machhermo, Gokyo and Thangna, as well as many of the major villages on the standard Everest route.

That is particularly useful for travellers doing the Gokyo Lakes Trek or Everest Three Passes, because these routes spend more time away from the busiest EBC corridor.

However, the word “hotspot” should still not be interpreted as continuous connectivity along the trail. A traveller may have WiFi at a lodge in Gokyo and then spend much of the following day’s trail without mobile data. The same is true around the high passes.

For the Everest Three Passes Trek, we recommend treating Kongma La, Cho La and Renjo La as mountain sections where you should not depend on an internet connection. Do your important communication before leaving the major settlement and assume that the trail itself may be offline.

Three Passes rule

Use internet when you have it, but prepare for the route as though the next high-altitude section could be offline. Your phone should still work as a camera, offline map, GPS device and source of downloaded information even when the network disappears.

Which SIM Card Is Better for Trekking in Nepal?

Nepal has two main mobile network operators: Nepal Telecom (NTC) and Ncell.

For trekkers, there is no universal winner in every location. Ncell can be very convenient in Kathmandu, Pokhara and other populated areas, while Nepal Telecom is often the first SIM we would choose for a trip that goes deep into the mountains.

That still does not mean NTC will work everywhere. Valleys, ridges and distance from a tower can create dead zones on either network.

For somebody whose trip includes several remote trekking regions, carrying only one network can sometimes create unnecessary problems.

A practical strategy for groups is to have both networks represented among the travellers. If one network loses signal in a particular valley or ridge, another phone may still have coverage.

Should You Buy a Nepal SIM or Use an eSIM?

Both can work, but there is one important question: which underlying Nepal network does the eSIM actually use?

An eSIM is convenient because you can arrange it before landing and avoid changing a physical SIM. However, buying an international travel eSIM does not automatically give you better mountain coverage.

If the eSIM uses a network with weaker coverage on your particular trekking route, the convenience does not solve the connectivity problem.

A local Nepal SIM can therefore be a very practical option for serious trekkers, especially when you know you will spend several days in remote mountain areas.

Whichever option you choose, activate your connection and test it before leaving Kathmandu. Do not wait until the first remote village to discover that the SIM, data package or phone settings are not working.

What Should You Download Before Going Trekking?

This is where good preparation matters more than having the strongest possible signal.

Before leaving a town or major trekking village with reliable internet, download anything you may need during the next offline section. Your maps, accommodation details, itinerary, important phone numbers and travel documents should be available without an internet connection.

Charging Your Phone While Trekking in Nepal

There is one thing that can become more important than the strength of your internet connection: having enough battery to use your phone when you actually need it.

Most established trekking lodges have access to electricity, but charging arrangements can vary considerably between lower villages and high-altitude settlements. Some teahouses may have charging sockets in the room, while others may ask guests to charge their phones in a common area.

On some routes, charging can also cost extra. At higher elevations, electricity is more difficult and expensive to provide, so trekkers should not expect unlimited free charging simply because a lodge has a power connection.

This is particularly relevant on long trekking days. You may use your phone for photographs, GPS tracking, music, maps and messages throughout the day, and that can drain a battery surprisingly quickly.

Why a Power Bank Is Worth Carrying

For most trekkers, a good power bank is one of the simplest ways to avoid unnecessary problems.

You do not need to carry an enormous collection of batteries, but having enough backup power for a full day or more is useful when you know the next settlement may have limited electricity.

It is also a good idea to keep your phone’s battery usage under control. Reduce screen brightness when possible, close applications you are not using and switch to airplane mode when you are walking through an area where there is no signal.

Your phone repeatedly searching for a network can consume more battery than many travellers realise.

Simple battery rule for trekking

Charge fully whenever you have a reliable power source, carry a power bank, and do not leave your phone searching for a signal all day in a place where no network exists.

Should You Carry a Satellite Messenger?

For a normal trek on a well-established route, most travellers do not need to buy specialist satellite communication equipment purely to send messages home.

The calculation changes on very remote or technically demanding journeys.

Routes such as remote Manaslu sections, Kanchenjunga, Dolpo or isolated high-pass routes can involve long periods without ordinary mobile coverage.

In such environments, a satellite messenger or satellite communication device can provide an additional layer of security when used appropriately.

The important distinction is that WiFi and mobile data are convenience tools, while emergency communication is a safety issue.

Do not assume that because you had excellent WiFi at your lodge last night, you will be able to contact somebody immediately from a remote trail the following morning.

What Happens When There Is Absolutely No Signal?

Sometimes the answer is simply that you go offline. That is not necessarily a problem.

Before leaving your last connected village, make sure you know where you are going, have your route available offline and have communicated any important information to the people who need it.

Offline maps can continue working because your phone’s GPS does not require mobile internet to determine your location. What disappears is the online map data, live messaging and internet-based search.

This is why we recommend thinking of your smartphone as an offline navigation and information tool first, and an internet device second when you are in remote mountain terrain.

The Best Trek for You May Depend on How Connected You Want to Be

For someone who needs to answer work messages every evening, upload photographs regularly or speak to family each day, a shorter and more developed trekking route can make life much easier.

For someone who wants to disconnect from work and spend several days away from constant notifications, a remote Himalayan route may actually be part of the attraction.

Neither approach is wrong. The important thing is choosing a route with realistic expectations.

Everest and Annapurna are generally the easiest major trekking regions for travellers who want to maintain some level of connectivity.

Shorter established routes around those regions are even more convenient. Remote circuits and restricted-area treks provide a very different experience, where being offline for significant periods should be expected rather than treated as a problem.
