The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the most accessible ways to experience the mountains, villages, forests, and cultural landscapes of Nepal’s Annapurna region within a relatively short journey.

The trail combines peaceful hill settlements, traditional Gurung and Magar communities, dense rhododendron forests, suspension bridges, streams, and open mountain viewpoints, with the famous sunrise from Poon Hill serving as the main attraction.

Unlike longer Himalayan routes that require several weeks of walking and prolonged exposure to high elevations, this trek offers a compact mountain experience that can be enjoyed by both first-time trekkers and experienced hikers.

The journey begins after travelling from Kathmandu toward Pokhara, the main gateway to the Annapurna region.

From Pokhara, the route continues toward Birethanti before the actual trekking begins. The trail then climbs through traditional villages and forested hills toward Ulleri.

This section introduces the character of the Annapurna foothills, with stone-built settlements, terraced hillsides, local communities, and views beginning to open toward the surrounding mountains.

The route also includes suspension bridge crossings and sections alongside streams, making the approach to the higher villages varied rather than a continuous mountain climb.

From Ulleri, the trail continues toward Ghorepani through forests dominated by rhododendron and other Himalayan vegetation.

The forest becomes particularly impressive in spring when rhododendron flowers add bright colour to the hillsides.

As the trail gains elevation, the surrounding landscape gradually changes from densely settled lower hills to quieter mountain forests, while glimpses of the Himalayan peaks appear between the trees and ridges.

Ghorepani is one of the best-known mountain settlements along this short Annapurna route and serves as the base for the early morning excursion to Poon Hill.

The village is surrounded by forested ridges and provides a comfortable stopping point before the trek’s most anticipated viewpoint.

From here, the route to Poon Hill begins before sunrise so trekkers can reach the viewpoint in time to watch the first light spread across the Himalayan range.

Poon Hill is famous for its broad mountain panorama, particularly at sunrise. As the sky gradually brightens, the snowy summits of the Annapurna range, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchhre become illuminated by the morning sunlight.

The changing colours across the mountains make the viewpoint especially attractive for photographers.

While the open panorama provides a memorable introduction to the scale of the Himalayas without requiring a long expedition into high-altitude terrain.

After the sunrise experience, the trail continues toward Tadapani through forested mountain paths.

This section provides another perspective of the Annapurna landscape, combining quiet woodland trails with occasional openings where the surrounding mountains can be seen.

The route eventually reaches Ghandruk, one of the best-known traditional villages in the Annapurna region.

The village provides an opportunity to experience the architecture, lifestyle, and hospitality of the local Gurung community before the trekking journey concludes.

One of the major strengths of the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is the variety packed into a relatively short route.

Within a few days of walking, trekkers encounter subtropical hill landscapes, terraced farmland, traditional villages, dense rhododendron forests, mountain streams, suspension bridges, high ridges, and expansive Himalayan viewpoints.

The combination of natural scenery and cultural encounters makes the trek more than simply a mountain-view hike.

The route is also considerably less demanding than many of Nepal’s high-altitude trekking adventures.

There is no technical climbing involved, and the itinerary does not require trekkers to spend extended periods at extreme elevations.

Nevertheless, the trail includes repeated uphill and downhill sections, particularly around Ulleri, Ghorepani, Poon Hill, Tadapani, and Ghandruk, so a reasonable level of fitness makes the experience much more comfortable.

For travellers staying in Nepal for a limited period, families looking for a manageable Himalayan adventure, or first-time trekkers wanting to experience the Annapurna region, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek provides an excellent introduction.

The combination of accessible trails, welcoming mountain villages, colourful forests, and the unforgettable sunrise from Poon Hill makes it one of the most rewarding short trekking experiences in Nepal.

    Trek exceeded my expectations

Ghorepani Poon Hill trek was more than I had hoped. Amazing scenery with the trail that led us past the waterfalls, through the forest, and to traditional villages. Our Nepal Royal Tourism guide Sudip was very knowledgeable and always ready to help us. I find it very difficult to describe the beauty of the early morning sun that beamed over the Annapurna range. This trek is definitely a suitable option for beginners in Nepal.

One of the best trekking experiences I’ve had!

I can say that I have never had such a wonderful trekking experience as Ghorepani Poon Hill. This trek is truly a Himalayan feast of mountain views but without the heavy physical exertion. I had a wonderful experience during this 8 days trek which gave me enough days to totally relax and appreciate the beauty of the Annapurna region. The efforts of Nepal Royal Tourism were top-notch as they perfectly organized everything. So for those who are up for a short adventure in the Himalayas, I would say this was the best option.

    Most thrilling experiences in Nepal

The 8-day program was regular and not exhausting. The alley of rhododendrons was enchanting, and meeting the people of the local Gurung villages was a touching experience. The team at Nepal Royal Tourism was outstanding in providing support throughout the trip. This is by far the best short trek you can do in Nepal.

Well organized by Nepal Royal Tourism

Those short of time or those unaccustomed to long walks might find this Ghorepani Poon Hill trek a very fine blend of walking and seeing. The trip plan of 8 days was quite normal and was arranged by Nepal Royal Tourism, very much geared towards the comfort of travelers. Two of the many sights that caught my attention were the majestic peak of Annapurna South and the beautiful Machapuchare. I highly suggest this trekking for those people who are visiting Nepal for the first time and want to get a first-hand experience of the breathtaking scenery and calm mountain atmosphere.

Highly Recommended for Hiking in Annapurna

Highly recommended for anyone seeking a trekking trip in Nepal.
My wife and I did a 10 day plan involving 5 days of trekking in the Annapurna circuit. Ganesh has been exceptionally helpful is helping us plan on such a short notice. He was very responsive on email, tweaking the plan and offering advice.
He picked us up from the airport arranged all accommodations and trekking activities with all lodging and food on the hiking trail.
He was also very patient with me as i was slower due a condition in my leg. Highly appreciated!!!
The views on the trail are amazing!

Ghorepani Poon Hill trek was mind-blowing

The trek in the duration of 8 days, was done with a perfect balance of amazing views and cultural experiences. Majority of the time Nepal Royal Tourism was the first to assist us and support us even when we were not aware of it, and they are capable of making the journey so easy and pleasant for us. Not to mention the sunrise from Poon Hill, which was simply out of this world. In my opinion, a trip to Nepal will not be complete without experiencing this one.
