The Mardi Himal Trek is one of the shorter and quieter trekking routes in Nepal’s Annapurna region.

It offers an excellent combination of Himalayan scenery, mountain villages, forest trails, alpine landscapes, and a rewarding high altitude viewpoint without requiring the long commitment of routes such as the Annapurna Circuit or Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

The route was officially opened to trekkers in 2012, turning what had previously been a relatively restricted and little visited part of the Annapurna landscape into an accessible trekking destination.

Even today, the trail retains much of its peaceful character and provides a more secluded alternative to some of the region’s busier routes.

Located east of the Annapurna Base Camp trail, the Mardi Himal route climbs gradually from the lower hills around Pokhara toward the high ridges beneath Mardi Himal and Machhapuchhre.

The changing landscape is one of the most appealing parts of the journey. The lower sections pass through traditional settlements and cultivated hillsides before the trail enters dense rhododendron and oak forests.

Higher up, the vegetation becomes thinner and the landscape opens into alpine meadows and exposed mountain ridges, eventually reaching the high camps and viewpoints beneath the Mardi Himal massif.

One of the major attractions of the trek is the dramatic change in scenery as altitude increases.

From the lower villages, the trail gradually opens toward views of Machhapuchhre, while higher sections provide much broader Himalayan panoramas.

From the upper ridge and Mardi Himal Base Camp area, trekkers can look across the Annapurna range and surrounding mountains, with Machhapuchhre standing prominently above the valleys.

Depending on weather and visibility, the panorama also includes sections of the Dhaulagiri and Manaslu ranges, creating an impressive high Himalayan backdrop.

The route also provides a strong cultural component despite being relatively short.

Villages along the trail are home to Gurung and Magar communities whose traditional settlements, mountain farms, local lodges, and everyday way of life form an important part of the trekking experience.

Rather than simply passing through a sequence of mountain landscapes, trekkers have opportunities to see how communities live along the ridges and valleys leading toward the high country.

The forest sections are particularly attractive during spring, when rhododendrons bloom across the hillsides.

The trail passes through areas of dense vegetation before emerging onto open ridges where the surrounding mountains become increasingly visible.

The contrast between the green lower slopes, colourful rhododendron forests, high alpine grasslands, and snow covered peaks gives the Mardi Himal Trek considerable scenic variety within only a few days of walking.

The upper section of the route provides the trek’s most dramatic mountain experience.

After passing Low Camp and reaching High Camp, the trail climbs toward the high viewpoint and Mardi Himal Base Camp area.

The early morning section is especially rewarding because the changing light gradually illuminates Machhapuchhre and the surrounding Annapurna peaks.

At approximately 4,200 metres, the viewpoint provides a spectacular elevated perspective, while the itinerary provided for this route continues toward Mardi Himal Base Camp at approximately 4,500 metres before returning toward High Camp.

The descent introduces another side of the region. Instead of simply retracing the same route all the way back, the trail descends toward Siding through greener landscapes and eventually connects with the road for the drive to Pokhara.

The route through Siding passes waterfalls, terraced farmland, rural settlements, and the Mardi Valley, providing a noticeable contrast to the exposed alpine terrain encountered above High Camp.

Another reason the Mardi Himal Trek appeals to trekkers is its relatively compact itinerary.

The journey can be completed in nine days from Kathmandu while still reaching a high Himalayan viewpoint and experiencing several distinct environments.

This makes it particularly suitable for travellers who have limited time in Nepal but want more than a short low altitude village walk.

Although the Mardi Himal Trek is often described as a moderate trek, the upper section should not be underestimated.

The route reaches approximately 4,500 metres at Mardi Himal Base Camp and the early morning climb from High Camp involves sustained uphill walking at high altitude.

Weather can also change quickly on the exposed upper ridges. The original route information notes that some sections may not always be clearly marked, making an experienced guide especially valuable for navigation and safe route selection.

The trek is also appealing for travellers looking to avoid the busiest sections of the Annapurna region.

While the route has become increasingly popular since its opening, it generally offers a quieter atmosphere than some of Nepal’s classic high volume trekking routes.

The combination of relatively short walking days, mountain scenery, traditional communities, rhododendron forests, and high alpine ridges makes it a strong option for trekkers seeking an accessible but genuinely Himalayan experience.

Spring and autumn are generally the most favourable periods for the trek, with clearer conditions and better mountain visibility.

Spring adds the attraction of blooming rhododendrons, while autumn is known for crisp mountain views.

Winter can also provide a quieter experience, although snow and colder conditions may affect the higher trail. The monsoon period is less suitable because rainfall can make the lower trails wet and visibility less reliable.

Overall, the Mardi Himal Trek offers a compact journey through several contrasting landscapes of the Annapurna region.

From the villages and cultivated hills around Pokhara to rhododendron forests, alpine pastures, High Camp, and the dramatic ridge beneath Mardi Himal and Machhapuchhre, the route delivers a surprisingly diverse Himalayan experience in a relatively short period.

For travellers who want spectacular mountain scenery, quieter trails, local culture, and a high altitude adventure without committing to a much longer trek, the Mardi Himal Trek is one of the most rewarding short routes in Nepal.

Route Map for Mardi Himal Trek – 9 Days

Frequently Asked Questions

The Mardi Himal Trek is a relatively new trekking route in the Annapurna region of Nepal, offering stunning views of the Annapurna range, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Mardi Himal itself.

The best times are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is generally stable and the skies are clear, offering the best views.

Yes, you need both the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card. These will be arranged by us before the trip.

It is considered a moderate trek. While not as demanding as some longer treks in the region, there are steep sections and altitude gains.

Mardi Himal Base Camp is located at around 4,500 meters (14,764 feet).

Essential items include sturdy trekking boots, warm clothing, a sleeping bag suitable for cold weather, a daypack, and trekking poles.

Altitude sickness can be a concern, so it’s essential to acclimatise properly and recognise symptoms. Adequate physical fitness preparation is also recommended.

Yes, travel insurance that covers trekking at high altitudes is strongly recommended.

Yes, some itineraries combine the Mardi Himal Trek with the Annapurna Base Camp or other trails in the Annapurna region. And we can accommodate according to your preferences.

Weather can vary, but generally, expect cool to cold temperatures, especially at higher elevations. Weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.

    Great time with Great service.

We had a great time during this trip, we went to see stunning view at Mardi Himal Trek, enjoyed Pokhara city, visited Lumbini birthplace of Buddha, did Safari tour in Chitwan national park, and had city tour in Kathmandu.
The trip was made perfect by Nepal Royal Tourism Holiday team. Great service, appreciated ! Highly recommend.

Very good trip with Naresh and his team

Just completed Mardi Himal trek with Naresh and team. This is my third time joining Naresh to hiking trip in Nepal. Great team that made the experience memorable, they ensured our safety throughout the 6d5n. Very well done and keep up the good work!

    Mardi Himal 6D5N 10 ppl - with Naresh 😘

6D5N Mardi Himal 10 people from Malaysia hike with our guide, Huparaj Tamang (aka Naresh), with an assistant and 5 porters.

All of them are professional and knowledgeable, having so much fun and even celebrate my 30’s birthday with all of wonderful people.

    Very memorable trip ❤️
Will definitely find back Naresh when come back Nepal and challenge other trail again.

Great hike with Naresh and team! W

Recently went on Mardi Himal trek with Naresh (Huparaj Tamang) and his team. He took care of us well by booking the best teahouse for accommodation and food while we were on our 6d5n trek. Naresh made sure we were safe especially during the hike to Mardi Himal basecamp. His team of assistant guide (Rajan) and Asok, Lakpa, Ram, and Saroj were extremely helpful during the whole trip.
Naresh made sure we were all physically well (checking for symptoms of possible altitude sickness) and encouraged everyone to hike to the Basecamp as “Mission Possible”.
I especially enjoyed the stories shared by our guide Naresh about the mountains and trails. Would definitely return to hike in Nepal and will not go with anyone else but Naresh. Well done, many thanks and wish you All The Best!

I want to go back to Nepal again if I have the opportunity.

It’s my first time trekking in Nepal, and I’m impressed by the tour guides, the atmosphere, and the food. Also, the items for sale in Thamel are very enticing.
